Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen sat out Monday’s practice with what was described as a toe problem, which wouldn’t be a problem except for what he has undergone the last year. Clausen played most of last season with two torn ligaments in his right big toe and had surgery Jan. 5 to repair the damage. His rehab was complete before the draft, and team officials said his absence Monday was largely precautionary. It will be curious to see how the coaches proceed and if the problem persists whether they’ll play him Saturday vs. Tennessee. Panthers starter Matt Moore will play into the third quarter, and the coaches might use the rest of the game to evaluate Hunter Cantwell and Tony Pike, who are fighting for the third-string job.
