The Oakland Raiders have signed defensive tackle Jay Alford, according to a league source. Alford missed the 2009 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the team's second preseason game against the Chicago Bears. He missed some practice time this preseason because of pain and swelling in the knee but played in each of the Giants' four preseason games. In his first two seasons, Alford played in all 16 games, with three starts in 2008. In that span he handled snapping duties on every regular season and postseason field goal and extra point attempt. A third-round draft pick in 2007, Alford's most memorable play as a Giant came in Super Bowl XLII, when he sacked Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for a 10-yard loss with 19 seconds remaining, helping the Giants seal a 17-14 win. Not sure how good of long snapper he is, can any giant fans feel me in? I always wonder why more fringe players didnt try to pick up long snapping, it is a pretty difficult thing to become good at tho. Alford is a decent rotational DT that can rush the passer some.
He's a decent Long Snapper (more was a short snapper for field goals). We had 2 players who could do it, so the better special teamer (and the backup who wasn't to be playing much got the job). Basically, he'll probably be a decent LS given practice and playing that position (if necessary). **********Automerged Doublepost********** That and he is a decent penetrating DT who was lost to too many injuries at the wrong time. If you give him time, he has the ability to be a good penetrating DT.
