Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio criticized NFL officials for two controversial calls in Week 1 on Monday. After officials negated a near-TD by Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson in Chicago and flagged Jacksonville's Kassim Osgood for an excessive celebration, Del Rio said officials need to use more "common sense" when they apply NFL rules. "There's a common sense part that's missing in this league," Del Rio said, via the Florida Times-Union. "When I saw the Detroit play yesterday, how that's not a catch, that's incredible." Johnson's catch, originally ruled a TD, was nullified on the field and upheld on review because he did not maintain possession of the ball after he hit the ground. Osgood caught a TD pass for the Jaguars, his first since 2004 when he was with the Chargers. Del Rio said officials were too harsh to flag him for what he said was a genuinely happy celebration. "That's a rule that's intended to eliminate showboating and that was just sheer exuberance, joyful celebration," Del Rio said. "No mocking, no taunting, but he went to the ground. You can't go to the ground. It's the rule, it was enforced properly; however I'd like to see a common sense application. If they want to ask coach Del Rio what he thinks, I'd like to see a little common sense injected into the officiating, allow our referees to use judgment. There was no attempt right there to do anything other than be excited about scoring. That's all it was. He wasn't showing anybody up. He wasn't putting himself out there. By the letter of the law, you can't go to the ground, so it's a foul." Source: USA Today
