ok let's discuss who should win the cy young for both leagues. people have their own opinions on what stats are the more important deciding factors in who they would pick which could make the debate interesting. my picks: nl - roy halladay al - felix hernandez
They care about wins, so I would have to say Price. And for the NL, if he wasn't hurt I would say Josh Johnson. But Halladay is going to win.
I agree with Halladay, but I don't know about Felix. I know about his K's, and his ERA, and all that. However, do you really give an AL Cy Young Award to a guy who's 13-12? Give me C.C. Sabathia instead.
i'm not a sabre metric guy but wins are an overrated stat. look at the lack of run support for hernandez. it's a number you cant ignore when compared to sabathia's. a pitcher shouldn't be penalized for something he can't control. should curt schilling be be discredited because he lost games 2-1 while with a phillies team that was a laughing stock ? hernandez was the best pticher in the al this season. also, didn't the al winner last year greinke have less wins than some other pitchers in the al last year ? same with lincecum in the nl ?
Roy hands down. You may call it a homer pick but David Price had an incredible year. His ERA against AL East opponents is 2.12. Name a better offensive division.
lol@ wainwright .... i actually have price 2nd. hernandez owned the al east as well. i know he didnt play them as much but they said on mike & mike this morning he was 5-1 against the al east with an era just above 2. **********Automerged Doublepost********** from what i saw hernandez started 15 games where he got 2 or less runs in support while posting a 2.84 era in those games. that right there is why the guy didn't have 20+ wins like sabbathia.
Halladay is a no brainer. Anyone that says otherwise just doesn't get "it" or is a hater. I agree with Smeagle. Hernandez should win it for the AL. I think these writers are becoming more and more aware of the actual "pitcher" and his stats and not leaning on wins as much as they have in the past. The crap Hernandez has been dealing has been outrageous. He's got a winning record, winning his last two. I think the writers are educated enough to look at the team he's on and take that into consideration. They've also changed the voting this year, so Hernandez doesn't necessarily have to get the majority of votes to win it. Not that it holds weight; Steve Phillips has predicted that 20 of 28 voters would pick Hernandez.
13 wins on the Mariners = 30 wins on the Yankees. I hope he gets it to show what a meaningless stat wins is in evaluating pitchers.
As one of my buddies said, "Anyone who doesn't think Felix deserves to win the Cy Young either needs to stop watching baseball or watch a whole lot more of it."
Felix & Halladay. Wins are important but too many of the top starters get no decisions. You need to look at the overall picture.
The M's shut Felix down???? I know there's no reason why he should pitch but, it seems like they are just trying to make sure he wins the CY. Pretty sorry if you ask me.
I hope the M's cost Felix the Cy Young by not running him out (and thus risking another loss) on Sunday. And for all the people going "look at the support Felix didn't get this year," guess what? Zack Greinke got the same amount of bullcrap to back him last year. He didn't lose TWELVE games. To give the "Most Valuable Pitcher" award to a guy with twelve losses doesn't show his value, it shows that he was King Crap of the Worst Turd Island in the American League. You can say wins are overrated, but to win 20 games with an ERA under 3 in what is arguably the toughest division to pitch against in baseball (even with Baltimore around) for a DIVISION CHAMPION- should Tampa win the East- should not be overlooked. I was set to make a ballot of Price, Lester, Sabathia... and then Lester got bulldozed by the White Sox tonight. Price should get the AL Cy. If Hernandez gets it, that just shows that the writers/voters have been bullied into it by the criticism/backlash they fear. It's funny to see how Ubaldo Jimenez gave away the NL award. Destroyed the entire league until the All-Star break, then he got figured out. It's going to Halladay because from day one, he was the best pitcher in the National League and he proved it by going out and doing his job daily.
yeah ok, got it. run support can not be factored in. if it fits your argument i guess. look, i have price 2nd, a close 2nd and i fail to see where ANYONE including the media has overlooked what he has done this season but many just simply give the nod to hernandez and yeah the run support they both got played a part in the decision. the differences are to big to ignore. they both did extrememly well against the AL east, yes price had more starts but christ 6 of his wins were against baltimore and toronto. again i don't discount price's body of work i just admire hernandez's more.
Just watch. C. C. will win it in the AL. If he doesn't, the Yankees Nation will scream bloody murder. I HATE the Yankees with a passion!!!
let the greaseballs scream and rant. maybe the governement will notice them and see that they are the answer to our foreign oil dependency issues.
Best record in the AL east in August 2010 MLB Regular Season Standings - Major League Baseball - ESPN and in September 2010 MLB Regular Season Standings - Major League Baseball - ESPN :icon_cheesygrin:
