According to the San Jose Mercury-News, Alex Smith might be benched for San Francisco's Week 6 game against the Raiders. After he threw two picks and lost a fumble in San Francisco's heartbreaking loss to the Eagles on Sunday evening, and endured a sideline outburst from head coach Mike Singletary, the Niners may be ready to go with David Carr. Of course, they may just fire Singletary.

    David Carr is the savior?

    :Loco:

I firmly believe Alex Smith is the best nfl qb on the 49ers roster right now. Frank Gore has played like total dog crap this season. why don't they bench him too?

Alex Smith is taking the fall when he's showed plenty of potential this season, and has led some key drives. The 0-5 start, people are panicing, but this isn't the right move.

i will admit he has been erratic at times........... slow in his reads .......... taking the check down too often ................. but david carr is not the answer. he's even slower in his reads and will hurt this team more than help them unless he has done a complete 180 in his abilities, which rarely happens. guys don't just all of the sudden develop the ability to read nfl defenses quickly and make snap decisions correctly every time.

Like last year Gore isnt getting any running room. He was getting tackled behind the line 25% of the time and he still gained 1000+ rushing yards. That whole team sucks but Gore is doing what he can.

Its Alex Smith who will get time, have open receivers and makes GOD AWFUL passes. I mean his receivers have beat the coverage and he just misses by several yards. Thats why I laugh when people say WHY DONT THEY GO DEEP, because Alex Smith CANT go deep. They do sometimes go deep and he misses by sooooo much.

Now i dont know how seriously id take the artilces author, Tim Kawakami has written some serious bs in the past. Hes the guy the raiders assistant wanted to fight and I dont blame him lol. Besides if they were so serious about benching him why did sing let him stay in that game?

For the past 6 years Alex Smith has shown "flashes of brilliance", and all 6 years it never materialized. At some point, it's not the OCs, it's the guy behind center, Gradkowski is not the best QB on the Raiders roster, but he gave them SOME kind of spark last season. Maybe David Carr or Troy Smith can give this offense some energy they haven't had.

Singletary is awful. What head coach do you see on the sideline with the microphone on his headset constantly up and above his head. Does he not communicate with his coordinators?

Smith isn't great, but there have been teams with Smith-caliber QB's win...I put blame on Smith, but I also put blame on Singletary...he's just not head coach material.

Troy Smith or Nate Davis... Id be happy with ether one starting. Screw David Carr and Alex Smith

I thought I saw that you guys had released Nate Davis?

Smith has impressed me in the limited action I've seen him in. The int to close the game last night, his arm got hit..only reason it was an int. It's not like he made a terrible throw. He just needed one more second of protection and that'd be a complete pbutt. I'm not saying he's an all-pro QB, but he's not the worst QB in the league, by far.

They did release him, but I think he cleared waivers and is on their practice squad...

Only QBs I can think of WORSE than him:
    Clausen/Moore
    Cassel
    Max Hall (pending)

I would take all other starting NFL QBs over him, yes, that includes Fitzpatrick and Shaun Hill.

Delhomme over Smith? Most days, I'd probably even take Smith over Sanchez at this point. It depends on which Smith you get. I'm just saying I feel like he's taking too much heat.

    Oh, I forgot Cassel.

The surrounding cast is always a legit argument for a niner fan if VD, Crabs, or Gore aren't performing. Never for Smith though. He makes bad passes at times, though most qbs do, but when you're saying he gets alot of time it makes me wonder if you watch the game! The o-line is atrocious, he is damn lucky to get 2 seconds to throw. That happens, and combine with piss poor playcalling earlier this year by Raye, and ints will happen. He is nothing more than a scape goat for terrible coaching/coordinating and bad management.

I was running off the fact that at this point it seems Seneca is the de facto starter if healthy.
