New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather could possible be suspended without pay for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Baltimore Ravens tight end Todd Heap, according to NFL vice president of operations Ray Anderson. "That in our view is something that was flagrant," Anderson said during an ESPN Radio interview today. "It was egregious and effective immediately, it's something that's going to be looked at a very aggressive level which could include suspension without pay, that's correct." Meriweather was flagged for a personal foul, but remained in the game. Anderson said that officials will be consulted about punishments. "We will ask the officials, and the officials have authority currently in egregious and flagrant situations frankly to eject," Anderson said. "So their authority in those situations will be clarified, but certainly the league office will determine internally with input from our officials what is the appropriate level of discipline up to and including suspension for a game or multiple games depending on certain circumstances." $50K fine not enough. I thought they were doing suspensions? Maybe that's "from now on." Dirty player. Second one wasn't flagged but the league noticed. Kudos to Heap for toughing it out.
He was pretty close with those kind of hits all game long, I was surprised he wasn't ejected - Belichik and cheap safeties seems to be a theme.
Don't put Meriweather along side Rodney as far as Belicheck. He's had Meriweather non starting for some of the season for being a dumbass on his assignments. If he don't get his crap together he could be traded. Not a favorite of the coach by any means.
