Bears LB Brian Urlacher Says NFL's Head Shot Crackdown A Bunch Of Bull Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher has waded into the raging debate in the NFL this week over hefty fines for helmet-to-helmet hits. And he's not happy with the NFL's crackdown on defensive players. "It's freaking football. There are going to be big hits,'' Urlacher told the Chicago Tribune. "I don't understand how they can do this after one weekend of hitting. And I can't understand how they can suspend us for it. I think it's a bunch of (B.S.)." Urlacher was referring to Steelers linebacker James Harrison being fined $75,000, Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather being fined $50,000 and Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson being fined $50,000, all for helmet-to-helmet hits on Sunday afternoon. In Urlacher's opinion, those fines represent the NFL's attempt to fundamentally change the game of football. "You know what we should do? We should just put flags on everybody. Let's make it the NFFL -- the National Flag Football League. It's unbelievable," Urlacher said. Urlacher did acknowledge, however, that Meriweather went too far when he launched himself into Todd Heap, using his own helmet as a weapon to drill Heap in the head. "There was one bad hit this past weekend: the Meriweather hit,'' Urlacher said. "The other two hits were legal hits. Robinson had a great hit. They were both running full-speed." Urlacher is absolutely right! The commissioner is trying to change the integrity of the game. The commissioner thinks he is protecting players but in actuality he is hurting the game itself. I for one am not a fan of all this pussification of the game.... Football is a violent sport, if you don't want to get hit go play Golf.. /rant
I agree, however one of the Harrison hits I felt was helmet to helmet. Sad state of affairs for football with these, never played buttholes, butting into the game. Goodell needs to go.
Anyone noticing a funny trend? Every player speaking out and calling it bullcrap is either a defensive player or retired. Easy to say that it's bullcrap when you're the hunter on the field, not the hunted.
Urlacher needs to pull his head out of his butt and realize that the majority of football players are not NFL players, they're high school kids and to a lesser extent post secondary school athletes imitating what they see in the pros - a large part of what they're 'trying' to do with this is getting h2hs out of football at all levels. So yes Brian, it is 'freaking football' and also it's is just a game played mainly by children who should have the chance to play without getting their block knocked off - I'm tired of these multi-millionaires talking like the league is entreating on sacred ground by changing these rule, if they don't like it they can go retire to the private island they can probably afford.
