The 49ers got huge contributions Sunday from a couple of backup players. Tight end Vernon Davis has nothing to worry about. When he gets healthy again, he will regain his starting job, but it's not so simple with quarterback Alex Smith. The 49ers are likely to stick with the hot hand at quarterback, coach Mike Singletary intimated after Troy Smith earned a game ball for his performance in the 49ers' 24-16 victory over the Denver Broncos in front of 83,941 fans at Wembley Stadium. Singletary has no other choice but to stick with the new Smith on the block. "We're going to continue to go forward with Troy Smith right now," Singletary said. "We're going into the bye week, and as far as Alex Smith is concerned, it's a week-to-week deal. I'll wait and talk to our doctors, trainers, whatever. But we'll make those decisions as we need to." He had an outstanding game given the circumstances. A great leader with a good throw paower and accuracy. Looked much better then alex and worlds ahead of david carr. Welcome to san francisco troy smith!
might as well see how far they can ride him. it won't get easier for smith, though, as teams get more film on him to game-plan. he needs to get better to survive.
If there is any momentum to be gained by this I say keep it rollin! It was great to see how exuberant the team was with him in the game. It was fun again. I don't see get same sense when Alex is in there. I also thought he was really smart with his throws. He didn't force much (except for the bomb to Delanie). It seems like he's more consistently accurate than Alex. We'll have to see how he responds once teams start to scheme on him. But I think he's earned the right for that to happen instead of them immediately rushing back to Alex. I think Sing is also fortunate Alex is nursing the shoulder injury, so he can say his decision is based on that. They're still making plenty of mistakes though (penalties, poor tackling, Dixon in to run the clock out at end of the game with the game still up for grabs??, poor timeout usage). I also don't understand how Denver does so well with play action when they have no running game? Where's the threat? Mays completely bit on the play action and so did Dashon on the flea flicker. Mays didn't even engage a backpedal on that play. If he had even taken 1 or 2 steps back first, Lloyd wouldn't have had a play on that ball. We need more discipline. I like the win, but we still have a long way to go.
It was good to see TS get some playing time. He may not be the protypical size QB but hes a great leader, and if the o-line keeps people out of his face he could have some big games.
yep, too much is put into the size of a qb. look at drew brees compared to jamarcus russell. you can't measure a person's ability to read and react quickly and throw an accurate ball in the middle of a play on a piece of paper. smith obviously needs to get better, though, because defenses will get better against him.
I read in a San Jose Merc news article that he had a 115 qb rating in his first start, a feat that A Smith has only managed twice in 50 starts lol.
Because Singletary really doesn't know what he's doing, he has no experience other then to play LB...
The guy had one good game against a mediocore team don't everyone start slobbering all over this dudes nuts already!!
Well the reason im so excited is like i said, given the circumstances he did an excelent job. Alex has had prep time and hasnt looked too sharp. Plus as someone else mentioned he is fun to watch.
Management has kind of forced the hand to play Alex Smith for far too long now. They should have made the move and swallowed their pride long ago.
This. And wasn't NEARLY as good as people want to make it out that he was. Stats don't tell the story the eyes do. Happy with a win, not sure we'll get it again. We didn't deserve it, mostly due to the terrible coaching (still).
