Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel's torrid pace lately has earned him a new distinction: AFC Offensive Player of the Month. Cassel is the second Chiefs quarterback to ever win the honor, joining Steve DeBerg from September of 1990. Cassel is the first Chiefs player to be named AFC Player of the Month since running back Larry Johnson five years ago. Cassel completed 90 of 144 passes for 1,111 yards with 12 touchdowns and only one INT for a 111.2 passer rating in November. His 12 touchdown passes led the league during the month, while his passer rating ranked third in the NFL over that span.

Raise your hand if you thought Cassel would be playing this good this season?

If anyone raised their hands, they be lying.

I've been consistently behind him since Tom Brady went down and he stepped up. Would love to see him against the Eagles and Vick.

    a couple of thoughts here:

    1) If Cassell has turned a corner and is on his way to greatness, or at least becoming a franchise QB, only time will tell if this is what we're witnessing, but it would not be unprecedented. Drew Brees wasn't very good his first couple of years as a starter and Eli Manning wasn't very good his first few seasons. It's not uncommon for a guy to need 30-50 starts before figuring things out.

    2) The Chiefs #1 running game in September/October has really opened things up in the Chiefs passing game. Defenses are focused so much on stopping them on the ground that Cassell often has guys running free, which obviously makes a QB's job easier to make completions.

    3) The Chiefs are play-calling to suit their passing game better. They aren't necessarily passing 'more' (aside from the Denver game, which was an anomoly), but the play-calling is now focused around 'running to set up the pass' instead of 'passing to set up the run' as they were early in the season.
