Auburn QB Cam Newton Likely To Declare For The 2011 NFL Draft?

Discussion in 'NFL General Discussion' started by BigBlueBruiser, Dec 6, 2010.

  1. Peter King of Sports Illustrated writes that he's been asked a few times in the last couple of weeks: How high will Cam Newton be drafted? King speculates that Newton will go somewhere in the top 10 if he chooses to come out, barring damaging information being found when NFL teams dig into him over the next five months, before the April 28 first round. King says that the off-the-field stuff is the key right now. Newton has eligibility left at Auburn. NFL teams were warned again last week to not discuss underclassmen with the press, so you're not going to get much truth out of teams right now, but from talking conceptually with four scouts or GMs, King says that at least two teams with interest in quarterbacks going forward will seriously look at Newton in the first round if he chooses to come out, which King hears is likely.

Am I the only one who thinks the first round is a stretch for this kid, let alone the top 10? No way in hell do I put a guy who had one amazing year in a college-style offense on my board that early.

  4. nope not at all. It's a major stretch. i don't see him going top 10 anyway. More like mid to late 1st.

Talk about the worst kept secret in college football. Of course he's going to declare. And yes I do think he will go relatively high in the first round. He has size, speed, and an above average arm.

Yeah, but I don't see any reason yet why he should be more successful in the NFL than Vince Young has been..

He would be a project, his mechanics aren't that polished (footwork), but he's a raw athlete. Late 1st to early 2nd round

He's got a fairly good arm as well (From what I saw against South Carolina). Unlike Vince Young, he has zip behind his throws.

I mean this in the nicest possible way but, how many of you guys have actually sat down and watched this kid play this year? Because from the sound of it not many of you can honestly say that.

  12. seen about half his games give or take either way.

I watched parts of the Iron Bowl and all of the SEC Championship game. It's why I'm not committing on a projected draft position on him, but all I would say is that he's one more good season away from being Vince Young with a better arm and minus a Texas excessive-hype machine.

I have to say Cam doesn't strike me as the type of kid who cares about the money.

I've watched far more of him than I would like. And while I think he has improved as a passer, a crapload of his passes are to guys WIDE open as a result of his threat of rushing. He has shown some nice touch.

Again I stress, he has played one year in a college spread/option offense. If some other team besides the Eagles wants to gamble that much with a 1st or 2nd rounder, be my guest. Preferably a division rival.

I'm so tired of hearing about "spread Offense" QB's. The passes still have to be made and the decisions have to be the right one's. If the Bucs didn't have Freeman I would picket OneBuc Place to draft Newton. Seems like a lot of hatred towards this kid for so reason.

Perhaps it's because he is a cocky, cheating (not only on tests, mind you), lying (see press conference. dude is so guilty it's freaking ridiculous he's still playing football) jerkoff who, along with his pops, thinks he is above the rules.

Lot of hatred for no reason? Lol
