Through no achievement of their own, the 49ers remained very much alive in the NFC West on Sunday. This year has followed the trend of things looking decidedly bleak after another 49ers loss only to have their hopes restored when they check out the scores of the other sub-par teams competing for the division title. The St. Louis Rams helped set up a game -- we're not going to use the word "showdown" -- next Sunday in St. Louis against the 49ers that might determine the NFC West winner after the Rams failed to seize control of the division today with a 27-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. An important game looms this afternoon, as the Seahawks play the Atlanta Falcons. If Seahawks lose, the 49ers will be just one game behind Seattle and St. Louis in the NFC West with two games to play.

14 games in, a 5-9 record can still make the playoffs.... WOW

  3. This will make Rich McKay's argument a little stronger against teams with .500 or worse records winning their divisions having a home playoff game.

yep, the nfc west is pitiful once again and i think mckay's plan may hold some merit. an 11-5 or 10-6 team may be playing a road game against a 7-9 team ............ makes about as much sense as Connecticut playing in a BCS game ................

A possible 6-10 NFC West champ?

If the rams and seahawks weren't playing in week 17, it would probably happen ................

  7. The closest you'll get to that is if the 49ers beat the Rams this Sunday and the Buccaneers beat the Seahawks.

Then the Cardinals would have to beat the 49ers in the final week and the Rams-Seahawks matchup ends in a tie. In that case, the Rams would win the NFC West with a 6-9-1 record.

At least you get a 6 win team in the playoffs in that scenario. lol

and the scariest part of it is how easily the scenario is for a 49ers division title. if they win their last 2 games and seattle just loses 1 of their last 2, the niners are division champs .......:icon_eek:...... sad .........

(obviously, the most difficult part of that equation is the niners winning both of their remaining games........ :icon_cool:)
