The Philadelphia Eagles have given an enormous amount of power to coach Andy Reid over the years but there are signs that his job security is starting to fade. Reid has overseen one of the winningest organizations in the league -- that hasn't won the Super Bowl. Jeff McLane of the Inquirer has taken account of everything that's happened since defensive coordinator Jim Johnson died in July '09, and there are definite signs that Reid's no longer a sure thing to remain head coach following the 2011 season. Several of Reid's closest allies (former GM Tom Heckert, Donovan McNabb and Sean McDermott) have been ushered (or allowed) out of the building. These were Reid's guys and while a case could be made that each deserved to go, the coach obviously had to be coaxed into cutting the cords and now it looks like Reid's future is officially on the clockafter he lost the benefit of a "transition" season when he pushed in his chips and replaced Kevin Kolb with Michael Vick early last season. Anything is possible. This offseason is veeeery important for him. He needs 1-2 big signings in FA, a good draft, and to reel in a phenomenal DC. The team overachieved last year so it isn't like that is contributing to this idea. Heckert was the only tough loss that's listed, but he was free to do whatever he wanted.
It appears that Andy Reid has no margin for error. If the Eagles don't make it to the playoffs or win a playoff game, Andy Reid is as good as gone. It would be a convenient move, especially with Jeff Fisher on the market.
Something.....I was asked...and I want to get eagles fans take on it....do you think Andy's success was a product of his assistants like Johnson and others
to a point yes, although i would think that's the case with all head coaches. now to what extent in reid's case ? well, no doubt early on johnson was a huge part of why the eagles were successful. his defenses were consistently up there with the better units with a few exceptions like '05. i think jim's last year and obviously the last two under mcdermott were not up to par. gotta give a nod to juan castillo on the o-line as well. like johnson he he had some good talent to work with and got the most out of those guys but he also helped make a few other average joes pretty decent linemen. beyond those two i'm not sure anyone else really helped reid.
Andy's always seemed safe, but getting rid of McDermott might have been the first sign that he's worried about his job after next year. Of course, he may have only done it because he thought McDermott wasn't getting the job done. There sure seems to be a lot riding on whomever they as a new DC.
