Titans Close To Naming Their Next Head Coach

Discussion in 'Tennessee Titans' started by BigBlueBruiser, Feb 6, 2011.

  1. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports that the Tennessee Titans are getting close to naming their next head coach. They could name a coach as early next week. Don't be surprised if they name offensive line coach Mike Munchak as their new head coach. Owner Bud Adams reportedly views him as a "link to the glory days of the Houston Oilers." A first-round pick (8th overall) out of Penn State by the Houston Oilers in 1982, Munchak played 159 games for the Oilers, earning nine trips to the Pro Bowl in a career that resulted in his induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

I guess any Packers/Steelers assistants are out of the equation then.

Whoever they choose will have an uphill climb......they were one of the worst on offense and defense last year in the NFL. They have no franchise QB and they lost the best damn d-line coach in Jim Washburn who always made our line a strength. It's going to take some rebuilding to get this team back on track.

  5. Hopefully its Mike Mularkey.

I think we need to go with a fresh voice. Not a retread from somewhere else. One of the biggest issues was the team tuning Fisher out. The sermon he was preaching was starting to fall on some deaf ears. Mularkey would have an uphill climb as the initial perception will be he tanked somewhere else.

  7. fair point but I think the players would be willing to give him a chance. I mean the guy tried to make it work in Buffalo. Players know Buffalo is nearly impossible to win at lately.

The only viable HC candidate without experience "failing" somewhere else is Perry Fewell.

I saw give someone like Fewell a shot. As far as talent goes the team needs help on defense badly. Bring a defensive minded coach to help shore up that weakness. I feel that the Titans should wait to see if coaches like Winston Moss are worth taking a look at too. Why not look at the entire talent pool?

  10. I like Fewell he is definitely a guy I thought they should give a call.

I really think the offense is in worse shape than the D though.

I really don't think the Packers/ Steelers have any asst's ready for HC jobs. I really don't like the idea of naming anyone but a coordinator HC. I really hate the idea of naming a position coach HC.

The offense is alright in my eyes. They are servicable. We went 10-0 once with Kerry and he had a freak injury to his thumb last year. Chris Johnson is our ace, but Kenny Britt when healthy was killing people. I think actually getting Jared Cook out there more will also help the offense. The o-line is fine at the tackle spots and they can use some racheting up inside, but they can win with the group currently in there now.

The defense on the other hand is an issue. The tackles have major health concerns, Jason Babin could be gone as a free agent, the outside linebacker position needs a major upgrade and we might need to replace our starting linebacker too. Chris Hope is on his last legs and Michael Griffin needs to get his head out of his butt and bring some consistency to the table. Not to mention our "strength" at d-line has a ticking clock on Jacob Ford and William Hayes. It's put up or shut up time for one or maybe both of them.

  12. agreed but the lack of a qb is killing me and I think a strong HC with an offensive background would know how to fix that quickly.

fair point. I definitely think D is a need. But to me it's more about resigning the players already there.

Resign Ball and Babin and Tulloch.

Keep Weatherspoon and keep developing Gerald Mccrath/ Rennie Curran.

draft a DT and keep Jones.

Hope is still servicable for right now. Griffin is a good player but like you said his consistency is an issue.

To me alot of the D depends on how effective Reinfeldt is at resigning them.
