The St. Louis Cardinals made Albert Pujols what they said was their best offer. It wasn't enough. So get ready, baseball: Pujols seems headed for the open market next fall. Source: SportsIllustrated
Pujols leaving isn't out of the question. The Cards strangled themselves with that Holliday monster extension. Tying up 30% of their cap on Pujols just may not be doable. Don't count the Orioles out trying to make a run at him. They damn near had Texiera.
I honestly can't see him leaving St. Louis - by the start of the 2012 season he will be close to 32 years old and if he thinks ANY team will give him a 10-year deal (even the Yankees) at that age then he is seriously delusional. I never heard what the Cards counter-offered but whatever it was he was somehow insulted by it.
doubt the yanks would get into that as well. not after doing one with a-fraud already and throwing more at jeter.
Pujols is worth $30 million a year BUT NOT for 10 years. I'd say for 5 or 6 years at most, thats it. If the Cards give Pujols what he wants, he'll be 41 once that contract is up. If someone is still in the big leagues at age 41, they are usually DHing in the american league. I don't see the Cards letting Pujols walk either BUT Pujols is going to have to budge on his contract demands.
Tell that to Pujols as he looks at A-Rod's contract and tries to convince himself that A-Rod's worth more. And don't think Albert is linked to St. Louis in any way. He could give a crap. Some team will step to the plate and offer what Pujol's wants.
Oh i'm sure the Cardinals front office has told Pujols that already. I don't even think the Yankees now of days would be that crazy to give Pujols $30 million a year for 10 years unless Pujols wants to DH. Only time will tell though.
Probably right, but some team/owner (eg. Cubs, Angels) could define being desparate by caving in to his demands (which is what I think will happen).
