San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has committed $10 million to wide receiver Vincent Jackson by designating him as the AFC West club's franchise player. However, he's not inclined to make a long-term commitment to Jackson at this time. Jackson has had two driving under the influence episodes in the past. “Vincent’s a good player and he’s always been a good player, which I’ve said repeatedly,†Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “I’m comfortable with not giving him a long-term deal right now and we are not negotiating a long-term deal. We’ll see how the year goes, but not at the present time.†Source: National Football Post
just wondering if this is the same GM during the draft with rivers and eli.... becasue really.... i now see why eli WOULD NOT play in san deigo.....
VJ is an idiot and any of you fans that think the chargers should pay the man, are idiots too.... i hope he gets traded, i cant stand this shelfish MF
They had EVERY chance to trade him last year and they repeatedly turned down deal after deal...A.J Smith is a freaking idiot, and they will NOT win a super bowl with him as gm...He does deserve to get paid...but not what hes asking. On the other side...if the Chargers are/were asking for so much in a trade that other teams are not willing to step up ( ive heard its now a second and a third round pick )...then they (chargers) obviously know he's valuable. They are being just as SELFISH as he is.
lol...what book is that? Jackson's a quality player...he's not worth the franchise money and the Chargers will have plenty of opportunity to trade him. Problem trading him last season was that he had the suspended games and a holdout as baggage. This season he just has a ridiculous contract which obviously can be negotiated on with whatever team trades for him. Balls pretty much in Smith's and the Chargers court as to what they really intend to do with him. THere's no arguing against him making the Chargers a better team.
So? Rivers is the better qb, plus they got Merriman and Kaeding out of the deal. Rivers alone makes it a win for the Chargers, Merriman (DROY, 3 time pro bowl and all pro selection) and Kaeding (2 time pro-bowler, consistently one of the best kickers in the league) make it rape. Just because Eli was on a SB winning team doesn't mean the Giants won in the deal. IMO it's pretty clear that the Chargers would have been worse since '04 with Eli instead of Rivers at qb, and the Giants would have likely been even better with Rivers at the helm + the draft picks.
Merriman is garbage now and super injury prone and was only good when he was roiding...lol. Now he cant stay healthy. He will still start...but only cuz hes with the bills. Lol. As far as those "big name players"...it doesnt matter because none of those players will probably ever win a ring with the team. Norv Turner constantly runs that team into the ground in the playoffs, and in the regulars season as well. AJ Smith is an idiot...he let drew brees go and LT as well..... Now, to be on topic. you can see what happens when VJ is in the game he makes them MUCH better, and you cant argue with that. When hes on the field..it changes the whole approach for the defense. His rookie contract was up, he was coming off of two straight 1000 yd seasons and a 9 td yr with like 65 catches.. thats deserving enough if you ask me.. He went about the contract thing VERY wrong..but he still deserves a contract and some money.
So this is a comfort issue. We do know he's had legal issues in the past. I think this is a combination of Jackson's legal issues and A.J. Smith simply being pig-headed. You put those two together and voila! You have instant tension. I still don't understand why the Chargers don't shop him around. If they don't want to commit to him, then why not see what they can get for him? It's not like he's going to go for that extra yard with the way things currently stand.
