University of Florida offensive guard Mike Pouncey expects to be drafted between No. 15 and No. 20 in the first round next month in the 2011 NFL Draft. As evidence, Pouncey points to upcoming visits with the Dolphins, Jaguars, Patriots, Giants, and Buccaneers. He'll kick off his visits Wednesday with a trip to Detroit. The Bears (No. 29) and Steelers (No. 31) are also believed to be interested in Pouncey. Source: Mark Long: Twitter.com
Well why not Iupati was taken in that same spot last year. Guards dont seem to have much value in the draft but you find a good guard that can open huge holes consistancy why not take him that early. Especially in a class that isnt super strong on tackles. Wouldnt mind niners taking him, Pouncy and Iupati would be nasty for other teams.
The G-Men is the most likely to take him in that area but I'm not certain we would address the position in the Top 20. The Giants haven't drafted a guard in the first since Eric Moore in 1988. We got Chris Snee in the second in '04 and we should be able to get another one later in the draft.
iupati was drafted on his massive size and only that...he didnt exactly have great production or play against top competition very much, he had a dismal rookie year but hey i guess as long as he can damn near flip a sled over pick 17 is justified id be very very surprised if mike went that high...hes not even close to the prospect his brother is and is definitely a guard, not a center. hes simply not THAT dominant of a guard to warrant that kind of pick. i love him, i really do, and i would love the steelers to get him at 31 but i do think thats about 5-7 slots too high for him. he is my #1 guard but hes just not a guard in the mold of hutch or faneca that just dominated the world in college, and hes not branden albert that he can play LT, and hes not a dominant college LT like andrews and davis were that become mauling guards in the NFL. hes just a good player that plays an undervalued position in the first round. Many people have watkins, ijalana, and cannon above him. right now hes a good player but not a top half of the first type player, his tape would actually suggest a 3rd round prospect sometimes. I like him right around where i liked justin blalock a few years back, and he went like top 5 in the second round
Pouncey is more of an early 2nd rounder too me but I know I'm in the minority there. I could see how he could warrant a very late 1st rounder. I think he will go in the early 20's.
Iupati made the all-rook team(http://gridironfans.com/forums/latest-nfl-headlines/149907-2010-nfl-all-rookie-team-announced.html), looked good in every Niner game (which was most of them) that I saw and San Francisco was second in the league running inside left. I have no idea where you drug up dismal rookie season but it's hardly applicable in this case.
There are teams like Indy that I don't think will pass on him. They need interior help and IMO it's either him or Sherrod in their range.
he was pathetic in leveraging opponents and in pass blocking, he made the all rookie team based on the crapty crop of guards last year and his massively overrated draft status. he was a day one starter for no reason other than they needed him bad and he was a first round pick. i didnt say he couldnt run block, hes too big and strong that he doesnt even need to try to run block, but theres more to it. mike pouncey will be alot better than iupati at first and in the long run imo. he isnt the mauler, but he moves better than any of the other first round guards ive seen im my lifetime (like 6?) and dominates the second level zane beadles was the other one right? not exactly a world beater. john jerry was better but only played in 10 games. last year rookie guards werent too good overall. this year will be different with pouncey, cannon, ijalana, hudson, and watkins imo i think indy is a possibility, but i think they target sherrod or solder first. pats, ravens, giants are all other option for him. i hope he ends up a steeler though, i just think hes being overrated by half the people cause hes the twin of maurkice, and underrated by the other half saying hes ONLY the twin of his pro bowl brother. hes a fine player, not sure hes top 20 worthy though...actually im pretty positive hes not
Mike Iupati was ranked as the 5th best guard in all of football, not just for rookies by pro football focus. Dont know where you got dismal rookie season and his apparent terrbile pass blocking? Did you watch 49er games last year? He had his ups and downs like any rookie but for the most part he appears to have a great future.
false. cannon carries his weight well but does not have the strength youd expect a 350 pound interior lineman to have. i like him as a RT cause of his light feet and wide frame. pouncey has the functional strength and 10x the mobility of cannon
Cannon is plenty strong enough. Although to be fair weight room strength doesn't always translate to on the field strength.
i did miss alot of combine coverage this year for the first time in like 5 years, but watching him play i think hes much better suited for the outside, inside would be a waste of a 6-5 350 pound dude with his nimbleness. agree to disagree i guess, i think as far as guards go i want mike pouncey and it has nothing to do with maurkice even though ive made it very well known that i love him
i freaking hate all the patriot love there Yahoo! Sports - Sports News, Scores, Rumors, Fantasy Games, and more ke_pouncey
Instead of "agreeing to disagree", Ill use the same argument I used in the Bowers/Miller/Quinn debate. Its all about fit I see Cannon as similar to Leonard Davis, epically huge and very nimble. Davis has always been best suited to RT, however he is a was blocking for Julia and Felix here and we like to pull our OG's. So for us, there is a huge value for big nimble OG that can pull effectively, while still being able to handle the bigger DT's
not sure how good his gonna be at pulling. his light feet arent to be confused with great ability to move in space. His light feet teamed with his decent punch and insanely wide frame makes me like him at RT. i mean ive compared him to shawn andrews before, so i think he CAN play guard and in all likelihood he probably will i just think he is what we would want as a RT so we can get away from colon there (flo was s*x, but idk if hes coming back, especially since there a lockout...damn i loved him) meanwhile i think mike will be one of the best pulling guards in the league cause thats his game. these brothers will be the most athletic linemen in the league besides bruce campbell maybe but they are freaks and they CAN handle bigger NTs. keep in mind they have a nice resume against guys like cody, dareus, fairley, nevis, dan williams, jerry, marks, dorsey, pat simms, and any other SEC DT to go pro, while TCU plays much less top competition. not like thats gonna make or break him since i do think hes one of the top 15 senior prospects regardless like you said i guess its what you look for in a G, but i think pouncey is far better and will be the first one off the board, cannon, while i do like him i think is a second round guy and should play the outside
