49ers Have A 1-Year Deal On The Table For QB Alex Smith

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports according to multiple sources, there is an offer on the table - for one year - for Alex Smith to return to the 49ers. Before the league year ended in February and before Smith became an unrestricted free agent, Jim Harbaugh told reporters that "talks are going on" between the 49ers and Smith's representatives. When asked Tuesday whether the 49ers made an offter to Smith before the league year ended last month, Harbaugh said, "The NFL does not want us to comment on contract situations." Smith, of course, did not sign a deal and can't do so with any team until the lockout ends or is lifted, although he is a free agent, he continues to work out regularly with teammates in the South Bay. So far, those workouts are limited to the weight room, but the players involved say that they are trying to organize on-field sessions as well.

to compete to be the starter..................at the end of the season over the last 7-8 games he played in from the eagles game he went 11 tds to 3 ints and 8 tds to 1 int after that game and at times really looked like a legit QB.

The thing that puzzles me about Alex Smith is he does that year after year. Starts off horrid, then when it seems they're out of it, he puts up numbers.

well in this case the playcalling at the beginning of the year was much better then the beginning and he also had i think 6 or 7 of his picks off passes that hit his recievers in the hands and were popped up also the oline was using a guy who hadnt played C in years 2 rookies and crabtree missed TC and they started off ice cold when alex would throw to him. Although alex throws that middle route to VD perfect. he does have some serious WTF moments but you look back at the last 6 years hes had a new coordinator every year 5 different number 1 receivers 4 or 5 different systems 2 shoulder surgeries consistantly a horrible offensive line what qb could succeed like that?

It's obvious to me at least that the 49ers and Alex just aren't good together, happy to see that he doesn't want the deal. It may be in his best interest to just go to another team and see if he can resurrect his career.

I'm not a Smith fan, but in his defense the situation he was in last season would've been unfair to any quarterback...

I guess that is true too, but I think he will get the David Carr treatment when Kubiak came to Houston. He'll get one season to prove himself to the new coach and he can't he is gone.

Think Smith going is for the best all round really, but also understand the idea of giving him one year to prove what he can (or can't) do under a new coach.

i have a weird time evaluating alex smith because i think he had either the best redzone QB rating or the second highest but he was horrible in the 50-20 range and average in the 20-50 area of the field. In the redzone its all timing routes essentially and timing routes have been where alex has played some of his best. Also when alex is calling the plays in a 2 minute drill hes really really good they almost always score which again is weird to me

I wouldn't mind him back on a one year deal but at the same time I'm not going to be shocked if he's benched midway thru the year. The only reason I hope he plays well is to address more impact players in the first rounds of the draft.
