Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams has seemed like he’s been on the chopping block all summer. Williams has underperformed since joining the Cowboys from the Detroit Lions in 2008 and, with the remainder of the guaranteed $54 million the team owed Williams finally paid out last year, the team has little reason to keep him for a $5.1 million payday in 2011. If the league emerges from the current lockout deciding to retain the labor rules from 2010, however, Williams has better odds of staying in Big D. “The Cowboys are on the hook for $12.9 million if Williams is cut,†said a staff writer at DallasCowboys.com. “Think about it: if it’s your money, it’s better to get some production from a player, even if it’s modest production, than simply not having him on the roster.†Some believe Williams, who recorded just 1,324 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in 40 games with the Cowboys, can still be a productive member of the team. “I don’t think they can afford to not have Williams on the team,†another staff writer suggested. “There’s also certain amount of unknown that has to be factored in when considering Dez Bryant’s place on the depth chart, so in an offseason that may not allow much time to work with Tony Romo and learn the playbook, I would tend to lean toward the guy who has been around here for a while. Remember, Roy was doing pretty well last year until Romo went out.†Williams tallied 19 receptions for 306 yards and all of his five touchdowns in the first five games with Romo before the quarterback year prematurely ended due to a season-ending collarbone fracture. He should be cut but it's not worth that much money. Just keep him on as the 3rd receiver and let him go next offseason. Or maybe is a trade an option?
21 catches, 306 yards, 14.5 YPC, and 5 touchdowns through the first five games where Romo wasn't hurt, the guy he spent time gelling with all off-season, says he shouldn't be cut. He was one of the few who played hard at the beginning of the season, and he was the one who stayed confident until Tony got hurt.
Yeah, he sucked two seasons ago. But he came back strong with Romo last season, and when Romo went down, the season went from bad, to freaking terrible, until Garret took over, for whatever reason. Him and Kitna never connected at all, maybe once or twice a game. But he showed what he can do with Tony, who will be his quarterback this season.. If there is a season. No reason to cut him performing like that, and if it's that big of a hit.
