Saints SS Roman Harper Not Interested In Giving Team Hometown Discount

  1. Roman Harper, an unrestricted free agent, says he would prefer to re-sign with the Saints, but he's not interested in giving them a hometown discount. "I can't do that," the five-year veteran starting strong safety said. "That would be unfair to myself. "If the numbers don't match up, there's no reason for me to just have to settle for something. Everything has to match up for me to come back." Owners are pushing for a mechanism that would allow teams to exercise the right of first refusal on three free agents whenever free agency begins, and it's a point of a disagreement in Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations. The players reportedly have rejected that idea. If the owners do get their wish, Harper — who has spent his entire five-year career in New Orleans — likely would be a player the Saints would consider for the refusal option. If another team outbids them for Harper, the Saints still would be able to match the offer and retain him.

Maybe he was playing out of position but he was awful when i saw him last year, i dont think they'll be overwhelming offers for his services

He's going to be hard to replace in that defense. Who else on that roster would be able to play that role as a run-stuffing SS? We know passing defense isn't his forte, although he does catch more crap than he should over one bad game. Too bad for him it was the last game we saw him play vs the Seahawks.

He is going to be hard to replace. He had quite a rought time in that game vs the Seahawks, granted the size of those receivers didn't help. Dude has been a great run stopper in the SS position. I'd definitely hate to see him go, but he shouldn't take a reduced amount either. One bad game shouldn't disqualify you for the contract amount you have earned in the other games.
