49ers FS Taylor Mays Not Garnering Much Interest In Trade Market

Discussion in 'San Francisco 49ers' started by BigBlueBruiser, Aug 14, 2011.

  1. Dan Pompei of the National Football Post reports there hasn’t been much of a trade market for 49ers safety Taylor Mays because some teams, at least, believe he is a man without a position. One talent evaluator said Mays’ inability to play in space and his lack of ball skills are deal killers for a safety. He also said ten years ago, Mays might have been a fine safety in the John Lynch mold. But teams don’t play their safeties like Lynch was played anymore because of the way offenses are spreading out and using multiple receivers.

3rd down OLB pass rusher. That's all I would plan on using him for.

Naturally, I wouldn't give up a pick for a guy who would be in that limited a role.

    Blitz him haa.

  4. what in the world makes you think he can rush the passer?

    He can't do anything else.

    He runs fast.

    He can hit.

He clearly has very little football smarts.

I'm not saying he CAN rush the passer... I'm saying, given his credentials, I don't imagine him being decent at anything but that.

  6. he can be an in the box safety who isn't asked to cover. Some teams still use one.

Too much football intelligence needed to be an every down safety, even if it is an in the box safety.

    Crowned Doesn't give a shit.

Mays has never been known for football smarts. Never will be more than likely. Not surprised he's not garnering much interest.

  9. I think I know where your getting at......

He might be effective as a blitzing safety....acting like a fourth linebacker at the line of scrimmage. Similar to a 46 defense.

  10. so make him a 3rd safety and have him rotate in.

Problem is teams see him as a liability. You rotate him in and the coordinator and qb are going to target him and probably win.

  14. that's why I said rotate him in and take him out on 3rd down/ obvious passing situations/ basically any time you don't want an in the box S.

hes probably a better (and bigger/faster) OLB than aaron maybin lol

They tried that last year and he wasn't that bad in coverage. He was no worse then Reggie Smith.

Agent Zero I rode the short bus

I think some coach out there will make him a Special teams guy. He is big and fast and isn't afraid to tackle. I think he could excel on kickoffs and punts.

Well thats what I thought but all of the sudden the niners put him on the trade block and there is NO interest?

he really wasnt bad last year in limited playing time...the knocks on him were true, but hes not terrible, even impressive for spurts at a time.

    guess harbaugh isnt into him
