Giants To Shift FS Antrel Rolle To CB In Nickel Packages, Will Lose Six Pounds

  1. Giants safety Antrel Rolle will shift to cornerback when the Giants are in their nickel package, he said Friday. It is unclear at this point if he will play there in the regular season. Due to Terrell Thomas' season-ending injury and the Giants injury problems at corner in general, Rolle had been participating in a small amount of individual drills at cornerback this week and lining up against the slot receiver in the Giants' nickel package this week. Rolle, who played cornerback at times during his five-year tenure in Arizona, welcomes the challenge. "I don't know what to expect for the rest of the season, but as for right now that's the plan, to have me line up at the nickel position," he said. "I have no problem doing that. It's something I've been doing pretty much my entire career. It's just a matter of being on the same page at the same time with my teammates." Rolle said he will lose about six pounds to give him the speed to remain in lock-step with some of the game's top receivers. "I plan on maybe moving down from 206 to 200 pounds," Rolle said. "I feel like I play a lot quicker, matching up with the faster, quicker receivers and I feel like it'll give me a better matchup at that point. It's all a process. I haven 't thought once about not playing a position. Like I tell my coaches all the time, whatever it takes for us to win, that's what I'm all about."

  2. This also means that Kenny Phillips will shift back to FS and Deon Grant will start at SS. Newly signed Brian Williams becomes the dimeback.

Rolle dropping the weight should benefit him from lining up against WR's. Rolle started his career as a CB so he shouldn't experience much drop off.

If we do get Prince Amukamara back as scheduled.......we should be okay. He'll have to learn on the fly since he barely had much practice time before the injury.

  3. Most importantly.....our schedule is pretty favorable in the early going of the season again.

    Week 1 at Washington Redskins
    Week 2 St. Louis Rams
    Week 3 at Philadelphia Eagles
    Week 4 at Arizona Cardinals
    Week 5 Seattle Seahawks
    Week 6 Buffalo Bills
    Week 7 Bye
    Week 8 Miami Dolphins

My only worry is how we hold up against Philadelphia. We have to dial up the pressure and try to limit what Vick can do.

He was a corner in college too so he shouldn't have much trouble at nickel. Now if they were planning on moving him to the #2 spot then I think there might be a little more concern.

Does losing 6 pounds really make you feel that diffrent? doesent sound like much

  6. It only says he'll play corner in nickel packages.....at least for the time being. Depending on Aaron Ross' performance in the early going.

They could go 6-1 or 2-4 over that stretch. I don't think the Redskins or Rams games are gimmes by any means. Should be interesting to see how it plays out in New York...with the way they secondary is...

I was praying that Terrell Thomas would come back, him and Webster have been so good together the past few years. We have been plagued by the injury bug yet again, only this time before the season even started.

Very true, you never know what could happen, but to be honest the only two Challenging games that I see on there is probably Philly, and Arizona, don't forget Fitz did get Kolb.
