Eagles To Use Franchise Tag On WR DeSean Jackson In 2012?

Beat writer Les Bowen suggests that the Eagles could use the franchise tag on wide receiver DeSean Jackson next season. Michael Vick's new contract yielded just an extra $1.6 million in 2011 cap space. That's not the kind of money that is going to get a Jackson deal done. But with Vick now locked up long term, the Eagles won't have to worry about using the franchise tag on him again. Jackson is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will make $600,000 in base salary.

they gotta find a way to extend jackson. may be another factor into why they are shopping samuel.

 

I thought they should've done this the opposite way. Extend Jackson, franchise Vick if necessary...

 

I dont think so if jackson never resigns and steve smith does well like he did on the giants i wouldent mind so much if jackson left.

True, but you don't know what's going to happen with Vick this season. At the very least, they should've waited until the end of the season. I won't disagree with the money Vick got in his deal, but I question the timing.

The cost on the franchise tag isn't set in stone either. It's something they could work on after the fact to get the cap number down.

 

the contract vick got was cheaper than the franchise tag and the unattainable bonus' that the Eagles always put in contracts, will help to reduce their overall cap figure once the bonus amounts are subtracted off the top next year.

 

I heard the deal for Vick is actually 5 years at $80M.......
