    86WARD -

Appearing on 97.5 The Fanatic Tuesday afternoon, T.O. was asked if he would take the field Week 1 against the Rams without a new contract if he were in Jackson’s shoes. “Absolutely not,†Owens replied. “I would have to better myself and my family and my situation. That’s ridiculous.†Jackson is in the final year of his rookie contract that will pay him $600,000. There are no signs of a deal being imminent. Jackson is heading into the regular season with an insurance policy and the hopes that something will get worked out. Owens said that Jackson has obviously received advice “to go in there, be a man about it and play under the existing contract that he has,†adding, “but I guarantee you — if he goes out and gets hurt, God forbid, he’s not going to get the contract that he probably would have gotten if he held out.â€

He's absolutely right. If something happens to him his value will deplete tremendously. That being said if you're going to play under this contract I would do my best to ball my butt off and tell the organization to eat a rod and sign elsewhere at the end of the season.

He didn't show up out of the goodness of his heart. Or for the better of the team. He showed up the last possible day he could to have this season count towards his FA/veteran status or whatever the heck it's called.

Minus the happy part, I totally agree with this. They know what they're getting into when they sign their first contract. I don't care if they're the 2nd coming of Jesus. Play your contract and you'll get paid. No reason you can't take 3 of 4 years of making 500k - 1 mil per year and save up enough to not be hecked god forbid something happens. You're job is to PLAY a GAME. Let's analyze those words. Play, something kids do because it's fun and enjoyable. Game, a challenge, a contest between 2 teams or one person and themselves.

Let's think about this. You're being paid very, very well to play a game. The leader of the free world, the commander in chief, the President of THESE United States of America makes $400,000 PER YEAR. He also has an expense fund of let's say, 150k. THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! You are NOT WORTH 50 million dollars. You are a FOOTBALL PLAYER. You don't dictate foreign policy, you don't try to figure out our economy or decide if we should go to war. You PLAY a GAME. Terrell Owens can suck a big fat c**k and shut the heck up. Desean Jackson has a very unnecessary pay day coming up either during or after this season. He is an AMAZING talent but Michael Vick he is not, Tom Brady he is not and even dare I say, Terrell Owens he is not. Go over the middle, make a play and don't be an idiot and Andy Reid will pay you. That's what he does. You don't question one of the best coaches in the NFL nor one of the top organizations. You PLAY the GAME and then get paid.

And we won't even talk about the whole first class travel, free clothes, cars and good, etc.

Terrell calling it exactly as he sees it, and he's completely right. This dude is the reason they've won some games, and to not pay him, and extend his contract already is insane. He's earned a new contract, why not give him one?

This. It's not like the Briggs situation where there's 3 or 4 years left. It's the final year of the contract, when a lot of contracts are restructered and extended anyways. Jackson has consistantly outplayed his contract by leaps and bounds. He's one of the top playmakers in the game and the Eagles need to pay him.

bingo. the eagles have money to throw jackson a bone at least this season and then workout a long term deal. people keep screaming players need to man up and honor the deal they signed (yes i was one of those people) and yet the teams do not have to honor that same deal. just go ask david gerrard.

Well, TWO is right. I mean $600K by todays standards is chump change for someone as valuable as DJax. TWO was crying about making $7M

so teams should have to pay players they cut? That's a pretty stupid statement.......TO level stupid statement. Shouldn't he be rehabing and trying to find a team still willing to put up with him? His Eagles obsession is pathetic and old news

so its fine for one side of a business relationship to have the ability to walk away and not honor a contract ? that's beyond moronic but that's the nfl. thankfully that isn't how the rest of the business world operates.

on the flip side no way should there be guaranteed contracts like the other sports though because that is just as dumb but there should be some happy medium in the form of a buyout or something but ultimatley it's the nflpa's fault that there isn't any protection for players so when guys like owens whine and point the finger at the owners they look stupid. go yell at your union head, player reps and fellow players that didn't push for something different.

It is possible that they don't want him long term. MAYBE, just MAYBE they want a prototype WR that can get more than 4 catches a game and provide a few more first downs.

Franchise tag his butt at the end of the year and get a solid draft pick for him?

    Just a thought.

All of this times 1,0000. People are always so quick to blame the players or call them greedy. These organizations are crooks and I say heck them get your money. They don't honor crap and anybody who feels different, well they're probably mildly goobered. Blame can be placed on the shoulders of both player and management but management are the real grimey mother heckers as far as I'm concerned.

Did I hear a story out there that the Eagles didn't have as much available money as they thought?

But I agree...throw the guy a couple extra bucks, work on another deal later. Chris Johnson style...

I side with certain players in certain situations.

But at the end of the day... let us not forget...

These men are making hundreds of thousands of dollars... or if they are lucky, millions...

    TO PLAY A FREAKING GAME.

    TO ENTERTAIN.

While teachers aren't making crap. While EMTs, LIFESAVERS, are making crumbs compared to these boys who run fast and hit hard. While your average joe works hard for $30k-$60k.

Little perspective helps me when I start thinking like your post.

Well you basically made my argument in the second paragraph.

And replying to your first sentence, yes. Here's why: take any player that signed a big contract this offseason. Say they destroy their knee this weekend. Say they physically aren't able to come back. It is impossible for them to play football because of an injury on the job.

You know that magical 'guaranteed money' they talk about in every deal? Guy gets all of it. Guy could get ALL of it and the team couldn't do a damn thing but ask pretty please for some of it back.

BS81 - you're a fan so you are a big reason they get paid what they do and while i agree other professions are grossly underpaid considering their importance thats a different discussion.

in football terms djax is horribly underpaid. period.

on the contracts, just be happy your company cant send you packing because of injury. ulimately the nflpa dropped the ball AGAIN by not pushing for something in the middle as in a buyout at a percetage of the remaining amount and then not have that money go against the cap.

@ward - the eagles are $5mil under, not sure how much the hanson deal will change that but toss the guy some coin.
