The roughing the passer penalty on Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop has the Packers scratching their heads according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Bishop rushed up the middle, grabbed quarterback Cam Newton around the back of his legs and then flipped him backward onto the ground. Bishop was shocked when the penalty was called because that is how the Packers train their players to tackle. In fact, in practice Wednesday, the team ran a drill where players flip ball carriers onto a cushioned landing bag the same way Bishop flipped Newton. "I'll just say this," coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday, trying his best to not criticize the officials. "The hit that Bishop put on Cam Newton in the game, that's the highlight tape we showed for our tackling drill today. That's exactly how you're supposed to tackle through the offensive ball carriers. "I understand there's judgment involved in that call and that's fine. But based on my judgment that is a classic example of a perfect tackle." Source: The Redzone
I scratch my head at about 99.8% of all roughing the passer calls. A lot of these penalties are horse crap.
