A large group of Cubs players stayed in the visitors’ clubhouse at Petco Park on Wednesday night long after losing their final game, cheering and screaming as they watched the clubhouse TVs, while their bus idled at the stadium’s loading dock. A huge roar erupted when Baltimore’s Robert Andino hit a walk-off single to beat Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon, and another erupted three minutes later when Evan Longoria homered for Tampa Bay to beat the Yankees and knock Boston out of the playoff race. A day later in Chicago, the question became the same one uttered by a player amid the din that night: ‘‘You think [Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein] would leave to come here?’’ If the answer is yes — and one report Thursday suggested he has told friends he would ‘‘embrace the challenge’’ — the next sound could be the cheering coming from the Cubs’ boardroom. And the hiring process for the next Cubs general manager could gain speed quickly. As recently as Wednesday afternoon, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said he was in no rush to make the hire — more than 10 weeks after making his decision to fire Jim Hendry — because of the magnitude of the decision, but that was before the Red Sox suddenly had no October baseball on their schedule. I would absolutely love for Theo Epstein to come over and run the Cubs. I've heard his name kinda thrown out there along with the White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn. I would be thrilled if Epstein got the job though. Can you imagine if he is the one to break both the Cubs and Red Sox curses? Dude would be a legend.
You can win 10 in a row for all I care. I just hope the Cubs win 1 before I die. I just want 1. More would be nice but I would be happy with 1.
i hear ya on that. i remember 1980. 1st one ever for the phillies. its a magical time. it would be huge for mlb and obviously even moreso for the cubs fanbase.
If he can go to Chicago and win a series he will solidify himself as one of the top 10 greatest GM's in the history of the game if not in the top 3. Theo hecked up with the Crawford deal but honestly he had no other option. It was the douches in the Bronx running up the price and these dudes REALLY wanted him. If he does go to Chicago though I bet he'd have a manager that would consider managing there...
This was the first thought I had when I heard the Francona news and Cubs possibilty this morning. Would be absolutely legendary.
I kinda enjoy their struggle to get a WS championship. But if they won, I wouldnt be opposed to it. I do kind of enjoy their whining. Go Phillies! Hope their run never ends...lol.
