Jon Gruden Signs Five-Year Extension With ESPN's Monday Night Football

Discussion in 'NFL General Discussion' started by BigBlueBruiser, Oct 17, 2011.

  1. Jon Gruden will remain in the ESPN "Monday Night Football" broadcast booth for another five seasons. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders coach agreed to an exclusive contract with ESPN that begins in September 2012. "Our Monday Night Football crew is special, and to have the opportunity to continue to be a part of this team, working these big-time NFL prime time games every week on ESPN, I'm fired up," Gruden said in a statement. Gruden has earned two Sports Emmy Award nominations for his work in the "Monday Night Football" booth, where he is joined by play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico and analyst Ron Jaworski. The 48-year-old Gruden is the winningest coach in Buccaneers history (60-57) and coached the team to victory in Super Bowl XXXVII, where Tampa Bay defeated the Raiders, his former team. "Jon is a rare individual who has been successful at everything he has done, going from one of the youngest coaches to win a Super Bowl to reinventing himself with this new broadcasting career in his 40s," Gruden's agent, Bob LaMonte, said in the statement.

Steve12 The night is dark and full of terrors

He's done with coaching then, or what?

  3. Really thought he'd get back into coaching in 2012..........

  4. I wouldn't rule out Gruden never returning to the sidelines but it seems he's really hooked to the MNF booth.

Awful. I'm sure he has an opt out clause to coach. It's not surprising though. These coaches get into the media side of things and like it cause it's a fraction of the difficulty that being a head coach is. Very similar to why Cowher hasn't left the studio for the field.

And the same reason that Jimmy Johnson is not coaching. But hey, twinky Vermeil returned after 15 years in the booth.

Gruden is only 48, so if he decides to hang up coaching for a few years it's not like he was ever at the end of his rope.

Gruden seems to enjoy talking about how great all the players are than actually coaching them. I think this is perfect for him.

  12. Gruden likes broadcasting. He doesn't want to develop players he just enjoys evaluating players.

He will probably be back on the sideliens with the Miami Dolphins come next year. Stephen Ross will find a way to lure him away from ESPN, even if it means changing the name from Sun LIfe Stadium to ESPN Stadium.
