With offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien accepted the Penn State University coaching job, the New England Patriots have requested permission from the St. Louis Rams to talk to Josh McDaniels about their offensive coordinator position, Albert Breer of the NFL Network confirms. McDaniels recently concluded his first season as the Rams offensive coordinator after spending 2009 and 2010 as the Denver Broncos head coach. Prior to leading the Broncos, McDaniels spent eight seasons in the Patriots organization, coaching the quarterbacks from 2004-08 and handling the offensive coordinator duties from 2006-08. McDaniels called the plays during the team's record-setting offensive performance in 2007 and guided a Tom Brady-less offense to a Top 5 ranking the following season, earning his head coaching opportunity in Denver.
