Without fanfare, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett announced that tackles Tyron Smith and Doug Free are switching positions. "Our starting point when we get back to playing football is that Tyron is going to be on the left side and Doug is going to be on the right side," Garrett said Thursday at Lucas Oil Stadium, where the NFL scouting combine is taking place. Before Garrett confirmed the move, many considered it a foregone conclusion after Smith excelled during his rookie campaign while Free struggled in his first season since signing a four-year, $32 million contract last summer. According to Stats, Inc, Smith allowed the same number of sacks as Free but committed three fewer penalties. At 21, Smith proved to be the Cowboys' most dependable offensive lineman -- showing an ability to thwart some of the NFL's top pass rushers and seemed to improve as the season progressed. "We feel like he's ready to make that move right now," said Garrett, who added that the club informed Free of its decision. "We'll see how it goes." Source: Dallas Morning News
no doubt this kid is a budding star. if he can stay healthy, he may end up being a stud LT in this league.
This is the move that needed to happen. Free was a monster on the right side. And I think with Smith's skills and his reach he will be a SOLID LT.
