The 49ers don't just have an offer on the table for Alex Smith, as reported by NFL Network and CSN Bay Area, it's been on the table for some time. So what's so long to sign the former first overall draft pick to a new deal? An offer for Smith has been on the table for "some time," according to the Sacramento Bee, but, the newspaper reports, the sides can't agree on the length of a deal or the amount of guaranteed money in it. The contract proposed by the 49ers is shorter than the five-year deal Smith and his agent, Tom Condon, are seeking, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Bee. The 49ers' trump card is the same one they use with all of their pending free agents: If you think you can get a better deal on the open market, by all means try to do so.

I tend to agree. Yes Alex does not turn the ball over but that is because he takes a lot of sacks and is very careful with the ball. At most he is probably a 3500 yd 20 td guy, which is pretty good but not eilite. I think his agent is just getting whatever extra he can get.
