The Houston Texans trade of linebacker DeMeco Ryans took a number of players offguard. According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle many are unhappy with the trade. Here are a few text messages from current or former players: “WTF!! You know what they are up to?†“Damn, man, and they talk about loyalty.†“Cold-blooded, man, cold-blooded. But Meco will be better off for it. He’s going to dominate in Philly.†“They don’t what leadership means, do they? Bet they won’t finish No. 2 in defense next season.†“It’s an ugly business. We’re not the same team without him. Gonna take a lot to replace Meco.†Players went onto Twitter with public comments as well. Owen Daniels: “Seriously? Meco too?†Brian Cushing: “I wouldn’t be half the player or person I am today without @DRyans59 this one hurts. Philly got a unbelievable player and leader today. #59″ Glover Quin: “Honored to have had the chance to play with and learn from @DRyans59.. True leader and great person… Preciate you bro.†Eric Winston (to Owen Daniels): “Watch you(r) back kid. @owendaniels you’re the last ’06 guy left.†Texans general manager Rick Smith released the following statement on Ryans: “DeMeco Ryans contributed significantly toward helping us build the foundation we hope will bring a world championship to the city of Houston. His professionalism and leadership cannot be over-exaggerated. This move was mutually beneficial for the Texans immediate and long-term goals, DeMeco’s career, and the Philadelphia Eagles. We appreciate all the hard work and effort DeMeco invested in our organization and wish him only the best moving forward. He is a class act.â€

caught me off guard, losing mario williams, then trading him away, seems like houstons defence is taking too much of a hit

Sounds like they're rebuilding that D. However, it was kind of shocking. But I'm okay with it!

Only off-season move I liked this year was re-signing Foster.
The released Winston, Briesel is gone, almost lost Chris Myers, Williams is gone, and then they trade Ryans.

I thought you were suppose to use the off-season to improve your roster.

Maybe its naive of me to ask but if last year he only played around 53% of the time and he is a true MLB that was a casualty of switching to a 3-4 from Wade Phillips along with a player that was hitting their team cap heavily. Why are Texans so upset about it?

He was pretty much the leader of that defense. He was their "Ray Lewis."

Thanks for the clarification, I was just curious because the lack of playing time, the high salary, and the change into the 3-4 made it seemed like he was gonna get released i think the Texans at least got something in return

Love hearing the praise for him. This could be a good move for his play, but will probably be better for the leadership on D. Either the Mike or a safety really needs to be the leader of the defense, and none of our guys were going to be that before this trade.

I agree but i thing Cullen Jenkings will provide some leadership as well this year, he said last year it wasn't his place due to being the new guy in the team

I understand the trade, but Cap had to be worth more than that. The Eagles needed him desperately and we moved up 12 spots in the 3rd and got a 4th rder..?
It looks a lot like we were more desperate to get rid of DeMeco than the Eagles were to get him. Doesn't make sense.

Before the draft is a notoriously crapty time to trade players for picks. Most teams already have a plan in place on how to use those picks, and they do.t want to give them up. Conversely teams are often willing to accept less for there players because the added draft asserts give them more flexabilty to pull trade ups during the draft if they are targeting some

Value wise, right after the draft is the best time to trade a player for picks because most teams have no plan in place to use picks, and may have not been able to get the MLB or whatever they want so they may flip a 2nd or so for a Ryans

eh, he apparently is well-liked by other players ........... that doesn't mean much unless he was truly a leader that was needed ........... the texans have a lot of depth at LB and on defense in general ......... maybe they felt like they had a lot of good leaders and needed the cap space and draft picks more.
