I was listening to sports radio and they touched on a subject about retired jersey numbers.

Why retire a number if someone can come along and un retire it because of who they are.

So my question is should Peyton Have chosen his number 18 which was retired by Denver on the 70s or should he have chosen a different number.

The guy that had the number gave Peyton permission to use it. Nothing wrong with using the number if the original guy is ok with it. Peyton even said he was going to get a different number but the guy wanted him to use 18.

The guy is 84 and has alzhiemers. IMO Peyton should have taken the high road and said thank but I'll wear another number, like my college number 16. I just think retired numbers should stay retired.

Idk. I don't really have a problem with it.

I agree with Omen. Once the number is retired...just keep it retired. But I don't have a major problem with it...

It's like they said on radio

Your good enough/special to have your number retired until someone better comes along.

We shouldn't retire numbers at all.

I think the worst is Jackie Robinson in baseball. He wasn't even the first pro black baseball player, and even if he was, it wasn't worthwhile to elevate him above all the other black players who suffered just as much as he did.

Kind of like MLK day, if you think about it. Where's Rosa Parks' Day?

It's really not a big deal but for principle's sake, it probably shouldn't be allowed to unretire numbers.. because if it's allowed, what's the point in retiring them to begin with?

yep, everyone is making good points and i almost tend to agree with alcohol that maybe they shouldn't retire numbers at all because we all know it doesn't necessarily mean it's permanent.

Yup the Dallas cowboys don't retire numbers. But they just don't hand out certain numbers either.

Same with the Steelers. They have one number retired and then the equipment manager just doesn't hand out certain numbers...but they aren't retired.

I kind of agree, I think it would be better more as an unspoken thing. Like even if Cleveland didn't have Jim's number retired, I'll be damned if anyone's coming in and wearing 32 either way.

    Yeah just wouldn't be right.

Remember when Montana went to the Chiefs, he asked permission to unretire number 16. Len Dawson said No and that's why he wore 19.

I'm glad Len stuck to his guns
