After seven seasons in the NFL, Chicago Bears running back Marion Barber has announced his retirement. "I want to thank everyone who gave me the opportunity to play, and I’m very thankful to have had the chance to suit up for two of the NFL’s most storied organizations," said Barber, who turns 29 in June. Selected in the fourth round (109th overall) out of the University of Minnesota by the Dallas Cowboys in 2005, the 5-foot-11, 221-pound Barber made a quick impression in the NFL with his physical running style, rushing for 2,167 yards and 29 touchdowns over his first three seasons in the NFL, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2007 despite starting just three of his 45 games over that span. Signed to a two-year, $4.5 million contract by the Chicago Bears to be the No. 2 back behind Matt Forte, Barber had 114 carries for 422 yards and six touchdowns in 11 games. The Bears used the franchise tag on Forte and signed Michael Bush to a four-year, $14 million contract to be the No. 2 back behind Forte, making Barber expendable. Barber was scheduled to earn $1.9 million in base salary with a $100,000 workout bonus in 2012. His retirement will free up $2 million in salary cap space for the Bears, Barber finishes his career with 4,780 yards and 53 touchdowns on the ground with 179 receptions for 1,330 yards and six touchdowns out of the backfield. Short lived career but when you run like he did, can't really expect him to last long. Least he got out while his body was still intact.
