Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel will not let the final two years and $21.5 million remaining on his contract get in the way of a possible trade, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The 31-year-old Samuel, who McLane notes was nearly traded to the Detroit Lions last summer, is due $9.9 million in base salary with a $100,000 workout bonus in 2012, with an $11.4 million base salary and $100,000 workout bonus awaiting in 2013. With Nnamdi Asomugha on the books for an $11 million base salary and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie scheduled to earn $1.963 million in the final year of his rookie contract, the Eagles have nearly $23 million in cash tied up in their top three cornerbacks. The eight cornerbacks the Eagles have on the current roster account for $28.4 million in salary cap space. Their depth at the position could make them a trade match with another club, general manager Howie Roseman said on Tuesday. "We (feel) like corner is a position of strength right now," Roseman said Tuesday via McLane. "But at the same time, when you talk to teams around the league, you're talking about maybe some positions that you have a strength and maybe that they have a weakness. You try to see if that's a match - whether that's cornerback or anywhere else." Source: Mac's Football Blog
Maybe this is why the patriots have been redoing contracts to save cap room? Wishful thinking probably.
Wait. DRC is on his rookie contract? FML. I bet that he walks after this season regardless of what happens.
I like how Asante is dealing with this situation he knows by reconstruction his salary there will be more teams interested in him and it increases his value when it comes to picks so its a win/win situation for everyone. And come on steve12 hes is most likely going to Tennessee, Tampa, or Detroit... no chance i see him going back to the pats Pats are reconstructing contracts to try to get Wes Welker signed up to a long term deal
