One Los Angeles institution is buying another.A group that includes former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson and longtime baseball executive Stan Kasten agreed Tuesday night to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers from Frank McCourt for a record $2 billion. The price would shatter the mark for a sports franchise. Stephen Ross paid $1.1 billion for the NFL's Miami Dolphins in 2009, and in England, Malcolm Glazer and his family took over the Manchester United soccer club in 2005 in a deal then valued at $1.47 billion. what? isn't this a team that has been losing money for several years? why pay 2 billion dollars for that?
Its a brand name. For some reason people still like the Dodgers brand. I honestly couldn't tell you why. Maybe someone else could.
this group won't own this team very long. 2 billion dollars? they're going to expect an ROI and most definitely will not be happy if they have to put more of their personal money to meet payroll if the team can't make ends meet.
He's an ahlete, he's clearly getting bad advice because that's an insane value for that franchise and it's problems but I can't blame him for not being smart in business because that's not his forte. Think any Dodgers refuse to shake his hand? Lol
I think just last week or so, a list was released on the values of MLB franchises. The Yankees led the way worth $1.85B, then the Dodgers, Red Sox, Cubs and Phillies rounded out the Top-5. So you drive a team into the ground and get paid $2B!! Wow...how about this dude's ex-wife...CHA-FREAKING-CHING!!! HALF!
Sure he is. Barely any of that money is his. He's the face of the group that bought it but he only put in like 20 million. And as stated, this is a BRAND. Put some money into it and you'll have a big return over time. Like it or not, this franchise can be on the same level as the Yankees as far as branding b/c of being in LA. Brilliant move. The thing that pisses me off is it guarantees that Fred Wilpon will NEVER sell the Mets. They're now valued at 1.5 billion. FML
THAT'S an overvalued franchise, I don't care if they're in New York. 1.5 for a bunch of perennial losers?
No hes not they are only going to hold on to the franchise for a while they are going to be pissed when they realize how big of a mistake this was. The first thing we learned in business is never overpay. They WAY overpaid.
The Yankees are valued at 2.8 billion or something along those lines. Last Monday the Mets were valued at like 500 million. They did overpay but I think this group can get some of the value of the Dodgers back. It'll take some work but unless the world ends in December they should make it back.
The Yankees and Red Sox have the biggest brand names in baseball why would you pay more for the dodgers ever.
I agree its alot but im sure there gonna own the team for a few years and get them better hopefully then sell them for more then they bought them for
