The New York Jets have either signed or are close to signing Australian rugby player Hayden Smith, Rich Cimini of ESPN New York reports. Former University of Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster, who is coaching Smith, tweeted that Smith had signed with the Jets, though no official announcement has been made by the club, and no official transaction has been filed with the NFL. Prior to his head coaching stint at Minnesota, Brewster coached tight ends at North Carolina and Texas at the college level and the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos at the NFL level and that is the position the 6-foot-7, 240-pound Smith has been learning to break into the NFL at. (According to Cimini, Smith's weight has been reported at high as 260 pounds). Smith, who turns 27 next week, is an Australian native who played men's basketball team at Metropolitan State College of Denver before moving on to rugby and earning a spot on the Men's National team.
