Lions general manager Martin Mayhew says a history of marijuana use in a draft prospect would not be a deal breaker, citing a shift in the league culture. "The league has really changed over the years," Mayhew said in a pre-draft press conference. "If you go back 10, 15 years ago, and a guy had a positive test, that was a big deal. That was something to be very concerned about. It still is, but not at the level it was years ago. There are certain things we want to hear from guys. There are certain things we don't want to hear from guys. It doesn't help us to tell you (media) what those things are." Lions running back Mikel Leshoure, defensive tackle Nick Fairley and offensive lineman Johnny Culbreath were each arrested this offseason for marijuana-related offenses. The team selected all three in last year's draft, but Mayhew says the Lions looks at those cases on an individual basis and he does not interpret the arrests as a fault of their draft strategy. There's a good chance that a candidate from any party who made it to the general election and included that on the platform would have a good shot at my vote.
Crap I smoked pot during the combine too. I think the league needs to seriously consider officially removing marijuana from its list of nonos...the use is so openly prevalent now among players that they might as well. Another consideration is how many states that have NFL teams have legalized medical use (and you KNOW theres players all over the league with cards) and in Washington and Colorados cases, potentially on the brink of full legalization. Id wager its only a matter of time before a player (Percy Im lookin at you) sues the league for the right to use their doctor prescribed medecine.
