Joe Vitt will be the Saints' interim coach in 2012, replacing head coach Sean Payton, who was suspended for the year for his part in the bounty scandal. But Vitt won't take over that role until Week 8, after he serves his own six-game suspension. In a Tuesday news conference, Vitt denied the NFL's claim that New Orleans defensive players tried to intentionally hurt opponents. "At no time did any of our players ever cross the white line to intentionally hurt another player," he said (via PFT). Vitt insisted that the conversation focus on the Saints' future and not the scandal. Despite his pleas, the questions invariably returned to the biggest story of the offseason, including the damning audio recording of former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams telling his players to injure several 49ers prior to their January playoff game. “I regret the words that were spoken in meetings,â€￾ Vitt said. “And, again, I'm going to say this one last time, and players in our league know this: What you do on the field speaks so well that there's no need for what you say. And the body of work of our players on the field has spoken well. And I don't think that you acquire the players that we have and the coaches that have come here unless you're a first-class organization. And that's what we have here.â€￾
