With the 11th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Dontari Poe, DT (Memphis). Poe is a tremendous combination of size, athleticism and movement skills. He offers a huge amount of upside but needs to get stronger and show the power expected from a 340-pound defender. He offers possibilities at a number of defensive line positions in a variety of schemes at the next level and can be a dominant force if he continues to improve and plays to his potential. apparently they had a chiefs-sponsored draft party at arrowhead stadium and as soon as this pick was announced, the crowd booed and then everyone immediately left. people in k.c. are really pissed about this one............ and i can't really blame them since fletcher cox was sitting there when they picked.
yes, decastro was probably the smart pick and the chiefs fans would have been much happier with it. the main reason chiefs fans are pissed is that they're just viewing this as another d-lineman 'reach' after suffering through the reaches of Dorsey and Jackson the last few years.
i thought it was a great pick. The dline of Dorsey, Poe, Jackson, Bailey is dirty. Linebackers In Johnson, Houston, and Tamba Brandon flowers, route, and berry in the secondary.... this defense could be dirty next year
They could have waited on a NT until the second or third, passing on Decastro for a run stuffer is inexcusable.
if he turns out to be ngata no one will complain. also, hes not a two down run stuffer...hes going to be at his best collapsing the pocket on 3rd down. Jerel Powe is just a fat run stuffer, Dontari poe is the truth lol and why the heck would they want decastro...that would have been a RETARDED pick :icon_cool:
I am probably the only one having him go to KC. The guy 6'4 346 with 4.9 speed. You may never see a guy like that again.
:wtf1: What d-line have you been watching. They've been below average against the run and get absolutely no pass rush. well, no crap. and if he turns out to be vince wilfork, chiefs fans will crap themselves. But those are BIG 'ifs'. Poe couldn't even dominate in conference USA ....... he was SECOND team all-conference in confusa ..... i'm not sure why you think he has such a great chance to be a dominate player. the guys bust potential is enormous and that's what the chiefs fans are so pissed about. you don't take a guy at #11 that has a huge bust potential and the chiefs should know that more than anyone after so many d-line busts over the past several years ............. Ryan Sims, Junior Siavii, turk mcbride, glenn dorsey, tyson jackson...........
they havent had anything close to being effective at NT and dorsey is playing out of position he was never used in a way that would make him look like a great NT prospect and he was on a terrible talentless team. He had like no stats and was still the MVP, they were that terrible. time will tell but i think being SO down on him because of how bad memphis was is the wrong way to look at it. hes more of a valuable prospect than taylor or raji were imo, at worst hes a fast shaun rodgers
we are in agreement .......... their d-line has been crap. and i think this is a big reason why the chiefs made this desperate move....... they need someone like a vince wilfork or b.j. raji to magically appear and make this d-line decent so they 'reached' and are just praying that Poe can do it.......... but, that means this #11 pick is not built on smart drafting ......... it's built on hopes and prayers and that's my problem with it. well, then that's where we disagree because i don't see poe being anywhere near someone like raji coming out of college ............. b.j. raji dominated on the field in a major program in a major conference ............... if b.j. raji had been on last year's memphis team in that weak-ass conference against weak interior lineman, he would have dominated and easily been 1st team all conference. and, vice versa, if Poe had had played in the ACC against better interior lineman, he would NOT have been as successful and would not have been 1st team all-ACC and 3rd team all-american, as raji was. now, i'm not saying poe's lackluster effort in college guarantees a failed nfl career. he obviously has a high ceiling and the 'chance' for him to be a dominant NT in this league is there. however, typically with a #11 pick, it's a tad bit smarter to get someone that does not have the huge bust potential like this guy (unless it's a QB).
Poe college stats were pretty much the same as Ngata's........ And I always kinda chuckled when fans tried to anylize his tape (which is always funny to me). Ive seen the dude push three guys into the backfield. Where he looked terrible is when they had him at 5 Tech trying to turn the corner. 350 Lbs should never use a spin move
