The New Orleans Saints have offered quarterback Drew Brees a multiyear deal worth close to $19 million-per-year, according to a report on Pro Football Talk, citing a source close to the talks. The source also told Pro Football Talk that Brees was seeking less than the $21 million-plus annual amount that had previously been reported. Brees said previously that the figures attributed to him by some sections of the media were overinflated. The two sides have until July 16 to work out a multiyear deal, or Brees would face a choice of sitting out the season or playing under a one-year franchise-tag distinction for roughly $16 million.

You have to wonder how many years "multi" means. He just turned 33. So you have to be concerned about when his play will start to diminish. If the contracts 2 or 3 years that would be fine. That would give them a few years to find his replacement. Anything more then that is a crap shoot. IMO

Whatever happens it'll be a typical NFL deal in the sense that the length and rate of later years doesn't matter as much. They can make it for 5-6 years and essentially cut and run for a relatively low cost after 3.

Maybe that's one of the reasons he's sticking harder than some would like to see.

I was going to say, that's probably his beef. I'm sure he wants 5 or 6 years, and doesn't want the contract built where they can axe his butt because of the money. Probably wants a stable salary throughout the deal and more than is normally guaranteed.
