Last month Brett Favre said in an interview with NFL Network that he didn’t have a relationship with his former team, the Packers, and he didn’t sound too keen on the idea of having his jersey retired in Green Bay. “I don’t need to have a retirement, retire your jersey, all that stuff to solidify my career,†said Favre. “I’m not gonna sit here and say when that time should be, will be, or that I’m waiting by the phone.†Packers President Mark Murphy, meanwhile, said in May that he was hoping the Packers could retire Favre’s jersey in the next couple years. When asked Wednesday if Favre’s attitude could be a factor in waiting longer than that to retire his jersey, Murphy said: “That could be a factor.†Murphy added: “What we’ve said all along is we’ll retire his number. He deserves it. There’s no question in our mind, we want to do it at the right time for both the organization and him.†Only five Packers players have had their numbers retired: Tony Canadeo (3), Don Hutson (14), Bart Starr (15), Ray Nitschke (66) and Reggie White (92). “You look up, that’s pretty rarified air,†said Murphy. “People who have had their numbers retired by the Packers, it’s a very special honor, so this should be very meaningful for both sides. We wouldn’t do it until the time is right.â€
