The finger-pointing has begun in Kansas City, and a good bit of it is amed at Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli. Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star opines that the Chiefs will never win big on Pioli's watch as the GM. Pioli has had four years to turn the Chiefs around, but with another sluggish start, the nice playoff run of 2010 is beginning to look like a fading memory. Babb says that the Chiefs embarrassing 35-17 loss at Buffalo and the 0-2 start are Pioli's responsibility more than the players and coaches, because of the way he has constructed and operated the organization. Time will tell if Babb's opinion is correct on Pioli, but one thing is certain, the GM who was supposed to revitalize the Chiefs organization is on the hook for at least some of the blame for the team's struggles out of the gate. It seems pretty clear from Babb's article that he is doing nothing more than voicing the opinions of KC fans and then some. At the current rate, I'd say Scott and Romeo might consider finding real estate agents that specialized in moving property fast.
The complete Babb article has Pioli's biggest boner as bringing Cassell to the Chiefs as the franchise QB.
The 11-5 season he had with the Pats when Brady went down was a complete smokescreen that Pioli bought into. Putting an organization's success into the hands of such an unproven commodity was foolhardy and questioned by everyone but Pioli. The Chiefs only success since Pioli and Cassell's arrival was the year the Chiedfs running game was one of the most potent in the NFL. The Cassell "experiment" was recreated by the AZ Cardinals. Backups on potent offensive teams don't translate into franchise QB's as a result of a few good games, IMO.
um, a lot of chiefs fans may be pissed off but their owner will probably keep pioli because pioli is running a profitable team.
Only the Lions lost money in 2011, so being profitable isn't a real barometer of being a really good GM.
it's not ME saying that the most important job of a GM is to put $20 million + a year in the owner's pocket in order to keep his job. I'm saying I believe that this is Clark Hunt's opinion and he will be happy with Pioli as long as the money keeps pouring in.
My bad. Then why does Clark reportedly keep telling Pioli to spend to put a so-called winner on the field and Pioli won't do it? You may be right, but it's damn embarrassing for the KC faithful.
well, clark may say one thing to the 'public' to keep the fans happy and he may be saying another thing to pioli in private. there seem to be a lot of similarities between both professional K.C. sports teams because the Glass family (Royals) always proclaims 'publically' that their only goal is to put a winner on the field but then their actions don't back up their words. it sucks to be a kansas city sports fan right now and much of the finger pointing, and rightfully so, is going to the owners.
