Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland admitted to muttering a profanity toward a fan who suggested that Ireland fire himself, according to the Miami Herald. Ireland spoke to the paper to admit that the incident did happen, one where he called the fan an a--hole during halftime of Sunday's game between the Dolphins and Oakland Raiders. The fan came up in introduced himself and made the remark that Ireland should be out as the team's GM. The fan then later called a local talk radio show in Miami to reveal the incident on air. "It did happen at halftime and I was going back to my booth after seeing my wife and I did talk to several fans that were very nice. But as I'm walking back this guy introduces himself to me and says I should fire myself," Ireland said. "It caught me off guard. I just turned and walked away but I did say the word. I regret I used the word I used. I thought I was using it under my breath. I guess I kind of said it loud enough that he could hear it. I literally said it under my breath. At the time I felt I handled the situation pretty good. Probably muttered it a little too loud. I regret that I said anything." Source: National Football Post
The fan is an butthole, if someone went up to him and told him to fire himself I guarantee the "fan" says the same thing.
But... he should be fired. Don't know the fan's track record, but Ireland is a known butthole. Not to mention, the fan wasn't at work, Ireland was.
i agree. that's inexcusable for a gm to do that. if one of us called one of our companies' customers an butthole, we would be fired instantly. and hasn't ireland done something like this before? seems like he's gotten into a confrontation with a fan before .............
There are douche bag fans EVERY WHERE. Ireland should have ignored the fan. Coaches and athletes have been fined for stuff like this before. IF coaches and athletes can't get away with this, then why should a GM be able to?
Come on Ward, if you were working and every day some butthole went up to you and told you that you were terrible and should not have a job eventually you would respond. And it's not like he got in the guys face, he said it more or less under his breath. And I believe Ireland is a douche, but he is human.
If I got paid 100's of thousands and I was one of the highest executives in a company...you'd be wrong.
Kudos to you then. All I am saying is that the guy was trolling for a response so he can get air time on the radio. Is Ireland an ass, yeah. But he wasn't Rex Ryan telling a fan to go heck himself when he was told Belichick is the better coach.
those of you that don't see a problem with what ireland did must not work in corporate america. there are very few companies that would allow an employee to keep their job after calling a customer an butthole
