The UFL has shut down operations for the 2012 season, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora. It's unclear if the minor league is done for good.

There have been rumors that UFL players and coaches weren't being paid -- one agent revealed on Twitter that he was telling his clients not to play until they received their paychecks -- and the UFL always seemingly is on the brink of going out of business.

"It's a shame,â€￾ Las Vegas Locos coach Jim Fassel told Sports Illustrated's Peter King. “We're 4-0, and I got guys who would have played for me with the Giants."

It's also unfortunate for a player like Brian Banks, who spent five years in prison for a rape he didn't commit and was trying to get to the NFL through the UFL.

This news also comes on the heels of the report that Marty Schottenheimer, who led the Virginia Destroyers to last season's UFL title, is suing league founder Bill Hambracht for $2.3 million.

"Team Virginia acknowledged that Schottenheimer was due the sums demanded for unpaid salary, bonuses and expense reimbursement, but Team Virginia informed Schottenheimer that it was financially unable to perform its obligations under the Employment Agreement," the complaint states (via courthousenews.com).

"Indeed, as of August 2012, the UFL informed Schottenheimer that it was unclear whether the UFL would continue to exist as an operating football league, due [to] its distressed financial situation. In August 2012, Schottenheimer again demanded that Team Virginia pay his unpaid salary, bonus compensation and expense reimbursement. Team Virginia failed to pay Schottenheimer any of the sums due following this additional demand."

The NFL really should just get in on this and buy the league and use it as a minor league system.

Maybe they can buy it, ship it off to Europe, and start something big over there!

    Oh wait....

Keep it in the states and run a spring schedule with it. Great place for players to show case their talents who have no hope of being drafted/are NFL cast aways.
