Eagles Could Be A Contender To Land Sean Payton

On Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the contract extension Sean Payton agreed to in 2011 never was approved by the league office, and Payton will become a free agent at the end of this season, when his year-long league suspension for involvement in the Saints bounty scandal expires. On FOX, Jay Glazer, who is close to Payton, quoted Payton as saying he "absolutely plans'' to stay with the Saints, and the Saints, angry that the story leaked in the first place, insisted Payton was going nowhere other than on their coaching payroll in 2013 and beyond.

But according to Peter King of SI.com, the fact that the story got out tells him a few things. It's no lock that Payton will stay a Saint; if it were, he'd have agreed to a rewritten deal by now, Payton, despite his charred reputation from being the only coach in league history to be suspended for a year, would be sought after in the offseason if he chose to enter the market, with possible head-coaching vacancies in Dallas and Philadelphia looming largest.

The most oft mentioned landing spot for Payton has been Dallas, since he owns a home there and coached for the Cowboys under Bill Parcells before heading to New Orleans, but King mentions another contender in the NFC East, the Philadelphia Eagles who could become players if owner Jeffrey Lurie fires Andy Reid following the season.

@TripTP: RT @LarryHolder: Not sure if this has been reported yet, but the #Saints and Sean Payton can negotiate his contract extension right now, via a source.

I think he stays with the Saints, but he could probably get double the cash from the Eagles, triple the cash from the Cowboys.

I seriously doubt he goes anywhere but New Orleans.

New owner, offer him whatever he wants, it ain't my cash.

But yeah I don't see him going anywhere unless something dramatic comes out of NO.

Saints, Cowboys, Eagles...Eagles I think would be the most work for Payton to straighten that team out.

TRUE! But let's be real. If/When he gets relieved of his duties there will be plenty of teams that call for his services. He may not be the greatest coach ever but he's one of the best in the game.

Sean lives in Texas. At least he has a home in Southlake. And, Texas has no state income tax.

Hasn't he already been quoted as saying he'll definitely be in new orleans next year?
