Pasadena, Calif. officials approved a measure that allows an expansion of the permissible number of annual events at the Rose Bowl from 12 to 25 a year, a stepping stone that could bring the NFL back to the Los Angeles area, reports the Pasadena Sun. Renovations to the Rose Bowl, once budgeted at $152 million, have grown to almost $200 million. Allowing a NFL team to play at the 90-year-old stadium for up to 13 Sundays a year could mean big dollars to the community. “We have a fiduciary responsibility to the whole city to take the next step,†Councilwoman Margaret McAustin said. I’m not excited about the NFL, and clearly [the Rose Bowl’s neighbors] are not excited, but it’s the responsible thing to do.â€. Barrett Sports Group, a Manhattan Beach consulting firm hired by the city, projects an NFL lease could raise from $5 million to as much as $10 million for the venue each year. Pasadena City Council members voted 7-1 to increase the number of events allowed at the Rose Bowl from the current 12 a year to 25 if a deal is struck with an NFL team. The NFL has not had a Los Angeles based team since the end of the 1994 season when the Raiders moved back to Oakland and the Rams moved to St. Louis. Source: Sports Illustrated
Here's how the NFL makes this possible. The Rose Bowl becomes the permanent home of the Super Bowl. In February almost guaranteed beautiful weather for the Fan experience and stuff. Add a skills competition to the week between the Conference Championships and Super Bowl. The stadium is big enough you'd sell out to 100k people easily. I think it's honestly the best idea. It's also great for prime time viewing. Game kicks off at 8ET/5PT making sure that they have a huge audience. IT MAKES TOTAL FREAKING SENSE!
Why would it be terrible? The area/stadium is fantastic. The weather there would be great each season meaning a decent game not effected by weather. And plus it will guarantee that crapty cities like Jacksonville never see it again.
Why should Pasadena get all the revenue from hosting the Super Bowl every year? It should be moved around and it's FOOTBALL...bad weather is part of the damn game...
Agree. They dont deserve another team but theyre going to get one eventually because the NFL thinks theres money to be made with a team in L.A. I mean, its not as if California doesnt have 3 NFL teams already or anything... :icon_rolleyes:
the rose bowl is a horrible venue for football .............. i thought l.a. was building a new football stadium if they get an nfl team? what happened to that idea?
I belive they are having problems coming up with funding. Its kind of hard to get investors to build a stadium for a football team that may someday come to your city. There was talk of the Vikings going to L.A. before they got their new stadium deal and more recently there was talk of the Rams but without a solid commitment, its tough to get people to invest in it.
they have had several teams there and the fans stopped going after the newness wore off. There are other cities more deserving to have a team but you are right. The league will go where the expected money is. I sorta want a team to go there so all the speculation of this team or that team moving there, holding their home city hostage, will end. And when that team leaves after a few years then they will clamor for another team to move there. It is a never ending cycle.
