NBC broadcaster Bob Costas used his halftime segment on "Sunday Night Football" to advocate for gun control following this weekend's murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, causing an immediate debate on social media.

In a segment about 90 seconds long, Costas paraphrased and quoted extensively from a piece by Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock.

After praising the column, Costas said: "In the coming days, Jovan Belcher's actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."

Belcher shot and killed Perkins, the mother of his 3-month-old daughter, on Saturday morning, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide in the parking lot of the team's practice facility.

The online reaction to Costas' segment was swift, with many people criticizing the broadcaster for expressing his personal views on a program meant for entertainment.

F Bob Costas. Rush Limbaugh said things less offensive to freedom and got canned, so bye bye Bob.

So if she shot her and himself with a hunting rifle, would he advocate abolishing hunting? Or if he stabbed her maybe eliminate knives. Screw you Costas. Freaking people and their high horse.

I don't hate Costas, and I do support some measure of gun control, but to say "no gun, no murder" is extremely ignorant.

Not a peep about possible domestic violence and/or depression......Just a complete 100% advertisement and endorsement of gun control by Costas and NBC.
Guess I've watched my last episode of SVU and SNF.

many countries do not allow their citizens to buy a gun for self defense but there are still a ton of countries that allow conceal/carry so this is not just a U.S. issue.

it's funny how so many people think people die simply because guns exist.

there apparently was so much anger/emotion in belcher's situation that he would have just strangled the girl to death and then jumped off a bridge if not a single gun was available.

preventing gun ownership wouldn't have stopped this.

    This.

How did Nicole Simpson die? How did the children of Andrea Yates die?

I've lost a lot of respect for Costas tonight.

It has been proven and cities/states with heavy gun regulation have higher crime.

    Bob can suck it

I'd like to read that if you have a link, thats something Ive always been curious about.

Regardless, making it more difficult to buy or own a gun legally and expecting it to lower gun violence is a ridiculous proposition. I'd wager that 99% of people who own legal guns and went through the whole rigamarole that goes along with that will/have never fire a shot with violent intent and if they have it's been a self-defense situation rather than premeditated intent to cause harm. People who use guns to commit crimes and violent acts (which are the people that Costas are so scared of) dont get them legally and are completely unaffected by stricter gun laws. The whole idea is like making it more difficult to get a hunting license because you have a problem with poachers.

I hope he does get fired. I'm not a gun owner or anything. But the fact that he used that venue and that situation to voice his own political and personal opinions, and in such an ignorant way, pissed me off. I honestly hope he gets fired.

wouldn't nbc have to "pre-approve" his spots, though?

apparently someone signed off on it so as much as we would like to see his pompous butt get canned, i'm not sure there's cause.

NBC is full of MEGA liberals who all agree with Costas. Absolutely nothing will happen to him.

I've always liked Costas but using a NFL game to advance an agenda isn't right. Everytime something like this happens people are always going " we need more gun control " . NO we need more stupidity control.

I've never been a Costas fan. He has always struck me as a smug "wannabe". He seems arrogant and unlikable.

I disagree with he did, but what made it worse is that he brought nothing new. He couldn't even use his own words. He used those from Whitlock.

    He's very punchable.
