Steve12 The night is dark and full of terrors

After a great turnout in the Nomination threads, it's time to get the voting started! GIF has spoken, and the Nominees are set. Now is the time for everyone to make their case for the person they think should win each award. The voting threads will be left up for a week or so, so everyone has plenty of time to debate and vote. After the voting is done, we'll wait and see how close we are to the actual NFL winners.

So everyone have fun and vote!

c'mon guys.... you can't be serious? aldon would be about 4th or 5th. no doubt he's an incredible talent but he benefits greatly from what they do on their d-line to free him up.

geno and von are ahead of him for sure and maybe even tillman, but obviously what j.j. has done this year clearly puts him at #1

I think it should be JJ. Really Geno? you say Aldon benefits greatly from his Dline. Geno has Johnson,Dunlap and the other guys eating 2 blockers to get him his sacks. I still don't get how Miller can be ahead of Smith.

the difference is geno and von are creating plays on their own more than aldon smith does. the niners system is for their d-lineman to eat blockers (some teams claim they hold) to free up their LB's to do the work. if you watch von and geno extensively, they are fighting off a LOT more blocks in order to make plays. and geno and von are NOT just sack creators. they are both very solid against the run. in fact, geno is amazing in the run game. i'm not sure why geno doesn't get the credit........... well, actually, i do ....... most people don't watch bengals games.

Given the 49ers 6 quarters without Justin, you could make a strong case for him IMO. Still, it is watt for sure.

That's what all 3-4 teams do. Aldon has to do the same thing Ware, Matthew's, Harrison and basically any 4-3 DE has to do to get to the QB. Beat the LT.

The DL in a 3-4 rarely occupies an OT, that only happens on a play in which an OLB drops into coverage, or if there is extremely poor communication on offense and a TE locks up with an OLB.

The DL in a 3-4s job depending on the play called is either to occupy blockers and push the line in order to prevent the QB from stepping into the pocket, or shooting through a gap in order to apply immediate frontal pressure on the QB

alright, i love it. good job JJ. talking x's and o's. (i wish we did more of this on GIF..... too much of the discussion is just melodrama b.s.)

when comparing von and aldon, even though the niners play more 3-4 and the broncos play more 4-3, i agree that their jobs are similar in that their job is typically to beat the LT or RT, which they are both good at doing. However, because most teams double Justin Smith and he is so good at 'holding up' the guard (none one is better at this), Aldon usually has great isolation and more room to work the inside move if he wants to. the guard working on justin can't slide over and cut off the inside move as easily because justin is so good at what he does. and because the tackle knows the guard is going to be held up, he worries more about the inside move, which can open up the outside move. hence, my opinion that aldon gets easier sacks/tackles than von.

in the case of geno, what he does is completely different. he plays in the middle of a 4-3 primarily. He does what a normal 4-3 DT does (eating blockers and containing his assigned gaps), but he takes it to a whole other level by being able to read the play as well as anyone, and in the case of a run, fight off the block(s) and make the tackle in his gaps or even penetrate and make tackles behind the l.o.s. And, even in the passing game, he creates more pressure than any other 4-3 DT in the game. The Bengals call on Geno to actually create plays from that position, which is one of the most difficult tasks in the NFL, especially considering he is double teamed most of the time.

Geno is basically what we all thought Suh would/should be because he has the same smarts and physical strength, but his motor runs all the time, unlike Suh's.

Again, i'm not saying Aldon Smith is a hack. I would still put him in my top 4 or 5 defensive players this year. I just feel he has an easier job than a few of the other guys.

I can't argue with an Watt choice, or even an Atkins on. I have a soft spot for 3-4 OLBs. While not a true OLB position they have a fair amount of Olb type responsiblities like dropping or more accurately being forced into coverage. It lessens a rushers opportunities to rush. Something I have argued with Cowboys for years over the merits of adding a pass rusher is that when your one pass rusher is Aldon Smith, and opposite him is Amhad Brooks ( even though he is a quality player) offenses know where the edge pressure is coming from most plays because you not going to drop Smith if your other rusher is Brooks.

It puts a lot of pressure on Smith to get to the QB because if he is contained, there is a good chance the D breaks down. IMO the downfall in a 3-4 as opposed to a 4-3 where you rush your two edge players every play without it being considered a "blitz" and compromiseing coverage

Most of the sacks Von gets are on 3rd down when he is playing DE with Dumervil on the other side. So he has 2 other DTS in the middle eating up lineman. Geno is swarmed with talent on that Dline,.

  18. and the fact the Texans blitz every other play doesnt leave JJ with one one one situations huh ? lol

yep, you're right. what j.j. watt does in his defense is equal to what aldon smith does. great analysis.
