Buccaneers Not Discussing Contract Extension For QB Josh Freeman The Bucs will not discuss extending Josh Freeman's contract this off-season which means his rookie deal will expire after 2013. If he plays great, the Bucs will use their franchise tag on Freeman and try to sign him to a long-term deal. The exclusive rights franchise tender for a quarterback would likely be more than $17 million for one year. The Bucs' don't want a situation like the Jets have with QB Mark Sanchez; they'd like to cut ties but have guaranteed him $8.25 million next season. Bucs coach Greg Schiano likes a lot of things about Freeman's game — he did set franchise records for passing yards and touchdowns — but plans to add a quarterback to compete next season either in the draft or free agency. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not going to pursue a new contract for quarterback Josh Freeman this offseason and hope that they are put in the tough spot of needed to get a deal done with him in a year. Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Bucs have made the decision, and it makes good sense to us, to let Freeman play out his rookie contract in 2013. Freeman has been up and down throughout his career and hasn’t done what it takes to convince a team to take the plunge with him. If Freeman has a great season, the Bucs could be faced with the unpleasant prospect of placing the franchise tag on Freeman in 2014. But that’s a far better option than signing the quarterback to a contract the club regrets for multiple seasons to come. Source: National Football Post
Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman Won't Get Extended; Why He Deserves a Deal The Buccaneers won’t extend QB Josh Freeman’s contract (instead allowing him to play out the final season of his rookie contract) according to the Tampa Bay Times. Freeman threw for 4,065 yards this year, along with 27 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, leading the Bucs to a 7-9 season and a 2nd place finish in the NFC South. That said, the Bucs are making a mistake in not locking their quarterback up for the near future. There are very few franchise quarterbacks in the NFL and Freeman certainly has the ability to be one. In 2010, the young signal caller threw 25 touchdowns, with only 6 interceptions, as the Bucs went 10-6. Freeman is just 24 years old and still improving, and Tampa Bay looks to have a strong young offense in place with Josh Freeman, running back Doug Martin, and wide receivers Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams. If Freeman has a breakout year next season, he may demand a contract in the Drew Brees/Tom Brady range, so the Buccaneers would be well-served to sign him at a cheaper price this offseason. even if freeman puts up numbers like he did his sophomore year, by far his best out of 4, he will not get a tom brady-like contract. dude could be best described as an 'average' starting nfl qb and even if he has a good year, he is, at best, in the matt schaub category, which is about 5/$60m, nowhere near brady's $20 mill/yr.
i agree. he could be the leading passer in the nfl and win the SB and it doesn't erase the first 4 years ....... need to see it for more than 1 year.
