The Philadelphia Eagles will interview Lovie Smith for their coaching vacancy on Thursday. Smith was fired after nine seasons with the Bears. He led Chicago to three division titles and one NFC championship. He lost his job after the team went 3-5 following a 7-1 start and missed the playoffs. The Eagles, who fired Andy Reid after 14 seasons, also plan to interview Indianapolis offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley this week. They've already interviewed five other candidates. Source: Newark Star Ledger
Never should have been fired? Cannot disagree more. He missed the playoffs 5 out of the last 6 years. That's not acceptable. Plus they never had an offense ranked higher than 15 because he could never hire the right guys to run it. Not to mention 2 straight late season collapses. Chicago did the right thing letting him go. I do think he is a good coach. He just needs help finding someone who can handle his offense.
The offense not being very good because of crapty OC is a GM issue IMO. Smith is a defensive minded coach. With them missing the playoffs the last 5 out of 6 years, they are in the toughest division in the NFC. It is tough to beat out Green Bay. I am just a little baffled that he got fired after a 10 win season.
Maybe I have a different view because I live in Illinois and listen to the Chicago sports radio guys every day. Every one of them was expecting Lovie to get fired if the missed the playoffs. Plus, when Lovie was hired he was told the number 1 goal was to beat the packers, which he obviously didn't do. He had a terrible record against winning teams as a whole.
I can imagine the local media is brutal. Being a Cowboy fan I can only dream of a 10 win season. So seeing a 10 win coach get axed just boggles my mind.
You have to factor in, too, that it was the first year for the new GM. Of course wanted to bring in his own guy. Lovie really had to wow him to keep his job. Obviously missing the playoffs yet again doesn't cut it.
Actually LS had control of his choices at OC & failed miserably. He problem was relying on his comfort zone at D to make up for offensive liabilities. All it did was keep the D on the field longer from loss of clock control. That's HCing #101 Good DC, just not good HC...
And Mr. Lurie would let him pick the OC but I think(especially after the JC fiasco) he'll give final approval on it. I'd still LOVE to have Lovie Smith as our HC to be honest as opposed to 3/4 of the folks that have been linked to the team. Smith, Arians, McCoy are the names on my list. Anyone else(not named David Shaw) can suck a rod.
I'm still not sold that Arians would be a great head coach. He did a phenomenal job in Indianapolis with the hand he was dealt. I mean it is super impressive that he stepped in as the head coach on short notice like that and did the job he did. But you can't discount that those players as a whole decided to step up their game as well for Arians and the "Do It For Pagano" campaign...I think Arians gets a lot of credit for that, but I do think at times he gets a little too much. Having said that, he's still my choose for coach of the year...
