ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the New York Jets are set to begin follow-up interviews with at least two GM candidates and he adds that former Bears GM Jerry Angelo is the guy to watch regarding their GM vacancy. The Jets have met with a number of candidates, but they have had a hard time generating interest from some of the top candidates because of their terrible cap situation. Their insistence upon retaining head coach Rex Ryan could also be a factor as to why candidates have already turned the Jets down. Former general managers rarely get another opportunity in the NFL, so I’m sure Angelo understands this quite well and realizes that he may have to take what’s available to him now if he’s ever going to have another shot at running a team. Angelo has been widely criticized in the past for his decision regarding free agents and the draft, but few people are as widely respected within NFL circles and while there’s still a chance that the Jets could sign a different candidate, Angelo looks like the favorite as of now.
